Jewish groups struggle for Holocaust restitution

PRAGUE (AP) ? More than 67 years after the Holocaust, Jirina Novakova refuses to give up her battle to regain property confiscated from her family.

Her hopes got a boost two years ago when 43 countries vowed at a Prague conference to back global guidelines for the restitution of property confiscated from Jews during World War II to their rightful owners or heirs. The nations pledged to try harder to return real estate stolen by the Nazis, open archives that might help those dispossessed and to process claims for restitution faster. She thought that show of international determination would pressure her country, the Czech Republic, and help her finally win a court battle to get back a button factory seized from her family by the Nazis.

But the 62-year-old is still waiting.

This week, Novakova was among 200 people from 41 countries attending another international conference in Prague to review the progress made and put renewed pressure on European governments to restitute such property or provide fair compensation.

Shortly after the 2010 conference, the Czech Constitutional Court overturned a 2009 Supreme Court ruling and earlier lower court rulings in favor of Novakova and other relatives seeking the return of the Koh-i-noor button factory in Prague.

Originally owned by her grandfather, Zikmund Waldes, it was seized by the Nazis in 1939 during their occupation of what then-Czechoslovakia. The factory was nationalized by the communists after the war in 1945. After the fall of communism, the state sold the factory to a private owner in 1994. No compensation was ever paid to the family.

The 2010 agreement "didn't help at all," Novakova said. "It's a little bit depressing."

But she refuses to give up. Now she is challenging the Constitutional Court's ruling and vowed to go next to international courts if she loses her appeal.

"I still have hope," she said.

The two-day conference in Prague ended Wednesday with new calls for restitution.

"While progress has taken place since the fall of Communism and the subsequent breakup of the Soviet Union, there remains an urgent need to help the tens of thousands of elderly Holocaust victims and their heirs whose property claims remain unsatisfied," Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Restitution Organization, said in a statement.

Some at the conference, however, say they have seen some progress.

"It's too easy to be pessimistic," said Stuart Eizenstat, a special adviser to the U.S. Secretary of State on Holocaust issues. "These conferences are not simply an exercising in speaking. They are peer reviews, they encourage action. Their declarations, even though not legally binding, have made profound differences in the ways in which countries have tackled this problem."

Eizenstat highlighted Germany and Austria as models for others for their property restitution and compensation laws.

But he also noted that post-communists countries, including Czech Republic, Poland Lithuania, Hungary, Romania have been doing well at returning communal Jewish property such as synagogues and cemeteries. But he said many of these countries have not done as well compensating for private property like homes and factories.

Poland, in particular, is often criticized for failing to pass legislation that would compensate Jews for their losses in the Holocaust. Once home to Europe's largest Jewish community, Poland had for many years vowed to tackle the problem, but in 2011, Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government suspended work on a compensation law, saying a rising state deficit left it unable to afford such payments.

Eizenstat said the struggle would go on.

"What we're doing is we're moving beyond the pledges that were made in 2010 to look at the concrete actions that have been taken," Eizenstat said. "We need to help survivors in their lifetime."

Humans head for moon's orbit - and beyond

"I JUST have to say pretty bluntly here: we've been there before." So said President Obama in 2010 as he ruled out a return to the moon. But there are signs on the NASA grapevine and from the world of commercial space flight that humans are once more headed that way.

A NASA crewed mission to lunar orbit could focus on exploring the moon's dark side and testing technologies to speed up exploration of Mars and other planets. Unfettered by the demands of state funding, a private mission may attempt something even more novel.

Since Obama's speech, there have been hints that NASA might be changing its tune. Rumour has it that the agency plans to build a hovering moon base about 60,000 kilometres above the moon's far side at a Lagrange point, where the pull of Earth's gravity cancels out the moon's. From this point ? called L2 ? astronauts would steer rovers round the surface in close to real time, much cheaper than actually landing on the moon.

NASA hasn't commented on the rumour, but the European Space Agency says it is collaborating with NASA on two lunar missions, one crewed and scheduled for 2019 (see "Europe has right stuff to take NASA back to moon").

Unexplored world

What's more, Jack Burns of the University of Colorado, Boulder, and colleagues, two of whom work for NASA, have written a paper, to appear in Advances in Space Research, that suggests what a mission to the far side might achieve (arxiv.org/abs/1211.3462).

An unexplored wilderness, the far side hosts one of the solar system's oldest and largest impact basins, the 8 kilometre deep South Pole-Aitkin basin, flagged as a research priority by the US National Research Council in 2011. It could help fill in a timeline for early solar system evolution and discover if impactors brought organics to the infant Earth. "The far side is effectively a whole new unexplored world in our own backyard," says Burns.

It may also be the only place near to Earth where it is possible to observe when and how the first stars and galaxies formed from the neutral hydrogen atoms that filled space in these cosmic "dark ages". The light from those ancient hydrogen atoms is still reaching Earth now, but gets drowned out by the ionosphere and signals from human technology.

Brains in orbit

Why control robots from L2, not Earth? It's a dry run for Mars, Burns says. The ability to hover above the Red Planet and operate robots on its surface would be a huge advantage. Currently, there is a 20-minute time lag each way when Earth talks to the Mars rover Curiosity, so each night the team sends up all the instructions for the next day. That makes things slow ? if something goes wrong you won't even know about it until the next day, let alone be able to fix it. Burns believes that space exploration in future will involve wheels, not (moon) boots, on the ground, and human brains in orbit.

Mars isn't the limit, adds Dan Lester of the University of Texas at Austin: "We could send human beings into orbit around Titan. They could do virtual scuba diving in the methane lakes." Burns's team is presenting the idea to NASA this week.

But wouldn't it be disappointing to merely orbit the moon or Mars, without planting any flags? Enter private companies. In recent weeks, space-minded media have been abuzz with a rumour that a new private outfit, allegedly staffed by former NASA astronauts and engineers, would soon announce its intention to put humans on the moon.

Even if it doesn't pan out, commercial outfits may be the ones to raise the funds for a crewed mission. Options include mining, tourism or even carrying out the stunt for the sake of publicity. A commercial mission may yet boldly go where governments fear to tread.

Effective Skin Care Tips For Glowing Skin A beautiful skin does not need expensive skin care products. It rather needs adequate care and attention on a regular basis. By ?adequate care and attention?, we mean taking care of skin according to the changing weather, lifestyle and age specific needs on a constant basis. Here, we present you 10 most effective skin care tips that will stand your skin in good stead forever.

Skin Care Tips for Glowing Skin

Use Sunscreen

Unprotected exposure to sunlight leads to premature ageing, hyper pigmentation, wrinkles and even skin cancer. Sunburns and tans indicate a damaged skin which needs to be shielded with sunscreen on regular basis. Wear a broad spectrum sunscreen throughout the year, which protects your skin from both ? UVA and UVB rays.

Apply sunscreen 20 minutes prior to stepping out of home on all the exposed parts of your body. Even when you stay indoors, don?t forget to slather your daily dose of sunscreen.

Moisturize Properly

A dry skin is a sure shot guarantee of prematurely old and sagging skin. If you want your skin to be taut and youthful than it is very important to moisturize your skin. Even if you don?t have a dry skin, it will be good to moisturize yourself with a water based lotion on regular basis. If you have dry skin than you can go for oil based moisturizer immediately after bath when the skin is still moist and is able to hold the moisture for longer periods.

On the other hand, in order to provide moisture from environment to your skin when it gets too dry, it is important to run a humidifier in the room, especial in the bed room at night time. Besides, always ensure to use some good quality moisturizing soaps and hand washes to avoid dryness on hands.

Exfoliate Regularly

If your skin is very dry than it will be wise to exfoliate once in a week. Exfoliation helps in unclogging the blocked pores, remove dead skin cells and helps in better absorption of moisturizer.

Effective Skin Care Tips For Glowing Skin

Too much of exfoliation can lead to damaged skin so be gentle with your skin while exfoliating. If you have normal to oily skin than you can exfoliate up to two times a week. Use a good quality moisturizer immediately after exfoliating for a glowing skin.

Sleep with a Makeup Free Face

To sleep with make up on is one of the biggest beauty crimes. Never sleep with make up on your face because it leads to clogging of pores, oxygen deprived and lifeless skin and premature ageing of facial skin. Always use a good quality face wash for removing the makeup. For removing eye makeup, use baby oil or cleanser meant for removing eye makeup.

Eat Nutritious Foods

Basically how our skin looks depends on our genes, our environment and our food. While we can?t do much about our environment and our genes, we can certainly take care of our food and can dramatically change the texture of our skin and can look beautiful.

This can be achieved by eating low fat and highly nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy products, lean meats, low fat sea foods, etc. Cutting on refined flours, sugar, cigarettes and alcohol can make a dramatic difference to our looks. Foods containing vitamin C, E, A and H are especially beneficial for our skin since these vitamins are building blocks of our skin.

Exercise Consistently

While everyone knows that exercising is good for health, not everyone is aware that consistency in exercises is very important for getting best results. You should exercise at least 4 times a week for 45 minutes.

Effective Skin Care Tips For Glowing Skin

Exercising helps in removing toxins from the body, releases endorphins- the feel good chemicals in body, helps in melting the fat and gives our skin a natural glow which cannot be achieved through cosmetics or beauty products. You can include a variety of exercises in your fitness regimen like aerobics, yoga, strength training, Pilates, stretches, cardio-vascular exercises like jogging, running, swimming, etc.

Stay Away from Stress

No amount of beauty products can improve a stressed skin and hence the best beauty bet is to stay away from stress. Somehow, this seems to be impossible in today?s age of hectic lifestyles. In such a scenario, learn to manage stress. You can learn meditation, breathing exercises or can enroll in one of your favorite hobbies to stay away from stress. A stress free skin can ooze real beauty and glow and can make your friends envy with you.

Go for Regular Facials

A facial is a complete package of skin care for your face. It takes care of deep pore cleaning, scrubbing, massaging and applying a suitable face pack on your face. Regular facials very well take care of facial skin and give it a beautiful glow. It is important to choose a well trained and well experienced beauty professional who can assess your skin type well and can give you an appropriate facial accordingly.

Effective Skin Care Tips For Glowing Skin

Hygiene is a very important factor while considering facials. Ask your beautician to use properly washed napkins and sterilized equipments while performing a facial. Use of dirty lines and equipments can lead to skin infections and can do more bad than good for your skin.

Dry Body Exfoliation

You must have heard that toxins are bad for our health and beauty and detoxing body can be a single great strategy for looking good. Apart from detoxing through diet, detoxing can be done through dry body exfoliation also. You can do dry body exfoliation before taking a bath.

You will need a dry body exfoliation brush for the same. Just start from your foot and work your way up to enhance the blood circulation and eliminate the toxins.

Drink Adequate Amount of Water

While everyone drinks adequate amount of water during summers, we tend to drink less amount of water during winters. Drinking adequate amounts of water is very important to eliminate waste products and maintain general health of body cells. A dehydrated body shows itself through shrinking and lifeless skin hence it is important to drink at least 8 glasses of water during winters also to maintain a plump and youthful look throughout the year.

These tips can help you achieve a beautiful skin for lifetime.

iPad Market Share - Business Insider

Here's more proof that tablet market share stats you see are either bogus or totally irrelevant.

IBM released its Thanksgiving and Black Friday report on mobile shopping, and the iPad completely dominates.

In the chart below, you can see the iPad represented 88.3 percent of all tablet shopping on Black Friday and Thanksgiving. It was also 9.3 percent of all mobile shopping. The iPhone was 8.7 percent in mobile, while Android was just 5.5 percent in mobile. (Add it up, and you have the iOS at 18 percent of mobile shopping versus 5.5% for Android.)

IBM's data comes from tracking online retailers with its Digital Analytics Benchmark product. These stats come from tracking, apparel, department stores, health and beauty, and home good, says IBM.

These numbers are particularly interesting because at the start of the month, IDC said Apple only had 50% of the tablet market. Samsung, Amazon, and Asus were supposedly eating Apple's share.

Those IDC numbers seem a lot more hollow now. Perhaps all those other companies are shipping lots of tablets, but they're not being bought and used by consumers.

Apple's CEO Tim Cook has long been skeptical of market share stats. When Apple announced the iPhone 5, he said the iPad had 92% of tablet web traffic, adding, "I don't know what these other tablets are doing. They must be in warehouses or store shelves or maybe in people's bottom drawer."

In other words, maybe tablets are being shipping, but not used.

This IBM data is also points to a bigger picture with Apple and Android market share. Android may be winning the market share battle, but it's losing the battle to be the platform. Apple is still being used more by people, which is what matters for developers and for companies.

Gadgets worth buying ? even if they're not on sale

14 hrs.

Black Friday's over, but the shopping frenzy continues. Even so, there are some?gadgets that never seem to end up on discount table. These are?the best products of the moment, and you can?buy them ? even if they're not on sale ? without feeling an ounce of regret.

We've selected these gadgets (and gift-worthy?premium?services) through our own?firsthand experience, along with insight from fellow technology reporters and other tech-savvy colleagues.?Most are options that make sense in any circumstance, but a few recommendations?are better suited for certain people (for instance, Android fans, T-Mobile customers, etc.). The goal is for you to have a "safe" list: These are indisputably the best tech options of the moment for your loved ones ? or yourself.?

Apple iPhone 5
The iPhone 5 is the best smartphone choice on the market right now. (And good thing too, because?if you favor iOS, it's really your only option.) It's ridiculously slender and light, but makes no compromises when it comes to performance and battery life.

Samsung Galaxy S III
Those who prefer Android should feel comfortable snagging a Galaxy S III. While the phone would have been even better if Samsung hadn't slapped so many embellishments?on top of the pure?Android OS,?it's a solid device with a large, bright screen and a snappy processor.

Google?Nexus 4?by LG
You can find the Samsung Galaxy S III on all U.S. carriers, but the?impressive Nexus 4 only runs on T-Mobile and AT&T in this country. Google's newest?smartphone has the latest, purest version of Android, 4.2 Jelly Bean, with features like Photo Sphere panoramic shooting and wireless display video streaming.?And since it's Google's own baby,?it's bound to be first in line for the next Android?operating system upgrade, too.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite
NBC News' Wilson Rothman declared the Kindle Paperwhite "the new king of e-readers" when he reviewed it.?It has great contrast that comes as a result of an innovative integrated lighting system. You still get the easy-on-the-eyes readability and impressively long battery life, but no more need for an Itty Bitty Book Light. ($119 for Wi-Fi-only model, $179 with Wi-Fi and 3G.)

Apple iPad (4th generation)
Though the iPad Mini has received most of the attention this season, we're not recommending it for now?because ? as lovely as the new size and shape is ? the screen should have higher resolution. We are recommending the newest iPad, however: It?maintains all the clever design touches and excellent battery life?of the prior generation, but runs even faster. Pricing starts at $499.

Google?Nexus 7?by Asus
The Nexus 7 is a lightweight,?high-performance tablet that delivers a pure Android experience to people who prefer that platform. While we don't feel that there are enough tablet-specific Android?apps to make any of those devices viable competitors to the iPad, this 7-inch tablet, starting at $199, is a best-in-class vehicle for Web, email and all of?Google's own services.?

Amazon Kindle Fire HD
For $199, the Kindle Fire HD makes a lot of sense for?media consumption,?especially if you're already in love with Amazon and its $70-per-year Prime media service. (Just don't?expect to be editing photos and?working on spreadsheets on this, like you can on an iPad.)?The 7-inch?tablet's a decent improvement on its predecessor, and the all-new?8.9-inch version is a solid step up for just $299.

Apple 13-inch MacBook Air
Choosing a laptop can seem difficult, but for most people, an ultra-light device with speedy guts is the way to go. Unless you're someone who does incredibly processor-intensive work ? or desperately needs a DVD drive ? the 13-inch MacBook Air, starting at $1,199, is the best bet. (Why else would so many PC makers try to copy it?)

AirPort Express
The router provided by your Internet service provider is typically a pain in the rump to deal with. If you're finally ready to accept that it's time to look elsewhere, then Apple's $99?AirPort Express is the router you should pick up. It's ridiculously simple to set up and you won't have to think about it much after the day you unbox it.

Spotify subscription
You want music. And you want lots of it. Instead of purchasing songs a la carte or forking money over for every album you download, you should sign up for a premium Spotify subscription for $9.99/month. You'll have access to millions and millions of tracks, instantly, and even be able to store them locally on your mobile device or computer for off-line play.

Amazon Prime subscription
Purchasing movie or TV show downloads quickly leads to a long credit card statement, but with a $70-per-year Amazon Prime subscription, you'll have access to a huge library of streaming video. On top of that, you'll also get free shipping on most items. If you own a Kindle, Prime also gives you "free"?book borrowing, including bestsellers like the Harry Potter series.

Netflix subscription
If you're not prone to shopping on Amazon and couldn't care less about getting free shipping with your video streaming service, then the $7.99-per-month?Netflix is the choice for you. Besides, its movie library is more impressive than Amazon's, at least for now.

Canon PowerShot S110
Canon's S-series cameras have gained a reputation for being the best point-and-shoot devices on the market. If you're not content with the photos your phone spits out and want the kind of manual control usually reserved for DSLRs, then the latest PowerShot S110 (between $400 and $450 retail) is?ideal. (And?if you can live without the S110's touchscreen and the built-in Wi-Fi, you can find the otherwise identical PowerShot?S100 on sale now.)

Canon EOS Rebel T4i
Canon's T4i represented a big jump ahead for the affordable?Rebel series of DSLRs. Its new processor ?delivers speed and low-light performance previously seen only in pro cameras, and its?HD video shooting is the best in its price range (it's around $800 retail). Unless you have a bunch of Nikon lenses, there's really no reason not to pick up one of these.

Nikon D600
Speaking of Nikon, the D600 is just right?for dedicated amateur photographers who want a full-frame DSLR but don't want to pay through the nose (the camera plus 24-85mm lens retails for around $2,500). It has all the features you'd want from a higher-end DSLR and a nifty viewfinder which offers 100 percent coverage (unlike many cheaper models).

Panasonic Lumix TS4
While you take most of your pictures with your phone, you get nervous taking it out at the beach or at the pool. One grain of sand or drop of water, and it's "bye?bye, smartphone." That's where the TS4 comes in. Whether you're way into extreme sports or just have kids, a rugged camera like this?is a great thing to have on hand. (Retail price between $200 and $250.)

Stocks close higher on strong tech

1 day

Stocks closed broadly higher in a holiday-shortened Friday session, with the major averages all gaining more than 1 percent. Techs led, with big-caps propelling the sector to its first positive week in the last 10.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 1 percent higher, led by tech firms Hewlett-Packard , Microsoft and Cisco.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq ?also closed up, with the Nasdaq gaining 1.5 percent. The S&P 500 had its best five-day winning streak since mid-March.

The CBOE Volatility Index, widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, fell to near 15.

Among key S&P sectors, techs and telecoms were the leading gainers, while utilities lagged.

Retailers were the main focus on "Black Friday" ? often the busiest shopping day of the year.

Matthew Shay, National Retail Federation CEO, told CNBC that the holiday shopping season appears to be off to a great start with consumers flocking to the stores. ?We?re predicting 4.1 percent sales growth this year which would be $585 billion,? he said.

Discount retailers Wal-Mart and Target were among the stores that opened their doors on Thanksgiving evening.?

In a press release, Wal-Mart U.S. said it had its "best ever" Black Friday events, selling 1.8 million towels, 1.3 million televisions, 1.3 million dolls and 250,000 bicycles.

Terry Lundgren, Macy's chairman & CEO, told CNBC that the flagship Macy's store in New York City had a record crowd for its midnight opening. "It was a record crowd last year but that crowd was exceeded at this (Herald Square) store certainly this morning," he said.

Apple also kicked of a Black Friday sale, cutting prices on iPads, iPods and MacBooks.

Gap , Nordstrom , Bed Bath & Beyond and Dollar General were all higher.

?Earlier in the week was so surprising,? Matthew Cheslock of Virtu Financial told CNBC. ?You had one of the biggest accounting scandals possibly, we had an insider trading scandal and the markets still went higher. Now we?re focused on retail, which is kind of a nice story. Maybe this gives us a nice little lift."

European stocks had their best week so far this year, boosted on Friday by strong German business confidence data and growing expectations Greece will receive more aid.

Greece said the International Monetary Fund had relaxed its debt-cutting target for the country, suggesting lenders were closer to a deal for a vital aid tranche to be paid. But other sources involved in the talks cautioned the funding gap was far bigger than Greece has suggested, according to Reuters. (Read More: Greece?s Lenders Move Closer to Deal on Funding.)

Turning to stock news, Blackberry maker Research In Motion was the subject of bullish analyst comments about the soon-to-be-released BlackBerry 10.

SAP , the German business software giant, is considering listing its stock in Shanghai.

After the close on Wednesday, General Motors announced that its financing arm will pay about $4.2 billion for the European and Latin American auto lending operations of Ally Financial.

In deal news, the Wall Street Journal reported that Baxter International is in talks to buy Swedish medical-equipment maker Gambro for about $4 billion in a bid to boost its kidney dialysis business.

Changing Your Resume for Each Company - job search techniques ...

IP is over the quota
IP is over the quota

A recruiter once gave me an excellent tip when she said to change my resume every time I applied for a job. Why I asked? She told me that company recruiters will often use a keyword search to select the candidates that they feel matches the position. This keeps them from having to sort through the hundreds of resumes they receive. She said that if the resume does not have the keywords that they look for, then they typically go into the rejected pile.

Depending on the position you're applying for, you should use words that will notify HR managers about your qualifications. For example, if you're looking for a position as the Vice President of an accounting company you might want to include words such as:

- Tax Accounting

- Reconciliations

- Profit and Loss Statements

It can be very difficult to find a job in today's economic climate, and looking for high level or executive work requires a keen eye, and often, knowing someone whose already in the organization. After updating your resume, send it to your friends in the industry and see if they are able to direct it to the appropriate HR managers.

If you're looking for a job as an administrative assistant you should use the following words when updating your resume:

- Ability to type 80 wpm

- Microsoft Office

- Mac office

- Reception

- Phone support

No matter the type of work you're looking for make sure you ask past colleagues or friends if they know of any open positions within their companies. It's always an excellent decision to put your feelers out and see what kind of work is available. And always change-up your resume to meet the requirements of the job. It may be a entry-level position, but as long as you can turn it into something down the road, it may be worth looking into.

Tips for Working with Keyword Search Software

Many companies will use a type of software that identifies keywords in resumes. But what can you do to beat these machines?

Revise your resume so it includes keywords included in the job description during your opening. Take for example, if the job description says, "Coordinate and develop websites and blogs," your resume must include keywords such as "websites" and "blogs". But only if you have the experience, of course...

Update your multipurpose resume with frequently used keywords so that you do not have to revise it every time you have another job interview. One idea is to revise it every six months in order to stay current. Newer keywords may be used in the future, so stay current with them.

Add the most important keywords to your cover letter. Don't over do it though. You just want to have a few of the choice words that HR managers are looking for.

Irish editor resigns following criticism over Princess Kate pics

The Sept. 15, 2012 edition of the Irish Daily Star had topless pictures of Britain's Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge.

By Isolde Raftery, NBC News

The editor of the Irish Daily Star has resigned following an internal investigation into his tabloid?s decision to publish topless photos of Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, while she was sunbathing in the south of France, the Irish Times reported.

Michael O?Kane, the editor, was suspended in September after investors of Independent Star Limited, the paper?s parent company, demanded O?Kane be removed from his position. Richard Desmond, whose Northern and Shell company co-owns the paper, demanded that the paper be shut down, according to the Times.

Following O?Kane?s resignation Saturday, the editors at the Irish Daily Star expressed a different view of the situation, according to itv.com: ?Mr. O?Kane acted at all times in a highly professional and appropriate manner and in the best interests of the newspaper,? they said in a statement.

The blurry, long-lens photos of the princess and her husband, William, were originally published in Closer, a French magazine. At the time, a statement from St. James? Palace in London said the couple was ?hugely saddened? by the publication. The royals contended they had ?every right to privacy in the remote house? where they were sunbathing.

The statement from St. James? Palace even drew a comparison to Princess Diana, William's mother and the Princess of Wales: ?The incident is reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting to The Duke and Duchess for being so.?

The images were not published in Britain, nor were they published in the Northern Ireland editions of the Irish Daily Star. Northern Ireland remains under British rule.

Both co-owners of the Irish Daily Star had criticized O?Kane?s decision to publish the photos but the Independent News and Media, which has holdings in Ireland, Northern Ireland and South Africa, ultimately decided that shutting down the paper would be unnecessarily extreme, according to the BBC.

Video: Blind patient reads words stimulated directly onto the retina

Friday, November 23, 2012

For the very first time researchers have streamed braille patterns directly into a blind patient's retina, allowing him to read four-letter words accurately and quickly with an ocular neuroprosthetic device. The device, the Argus II, has been implanted in over 50 patients, many of who can now see color, movement and objects. It uses a small camera mounted on a pair of glasses, a portable processor to translate the signal from the camera into electrical stimulation, and a microchip with electrodes implanted directly on the retina. The study was authored by researchers at Second Sight, the company who developed the device, and has been published in Frontiers in Neuroprosthetics on the 22nd of November.

"In this clinical test with a single blind patient, we bypassed the camera that is the usual input for the implant and directly stimulated the retina. Instead of feeling the braille on the tips of his fingers, the patient could see the patterns we projected and then read individual letters in less than a second with up to 89% accuracy," explains researcher Thomas Lauritzen, lead author of the paper.

Similar in concept to successful cochlear implants, the visual implant uses a grid of 60 electrodes?attached to the retina?to stimulate patterns directly onto the nerve cells. For this study, the researchers at Second Sight used a computer to stimulate six of these points on the grid to project the braille letters. A series of tests were conducted with single letters as well as words ranging in length from two letters up to four. The patient was shown each letter for half a second and had up to 80% accuracy for short words.

In this video, a patient reads words with the Argus II setup using the camera and not the direct braille stimulation. Credit: Second Sight

"There was no input except the electrode stimulation and the patient recognized the braille letters easily. This proves that the patient has good spatial resolution because he could easily distinguish between signals on different, individual electrodes." says Lauritzen.

According to Silvestro Micera at EPFL's Center for Neuroprosthetics and scientific reviewer for the article, "this study is a proof of concept that points to the importance of clinical experiments involving new neuroprosthetic devices to improve the technology and innovate adaptable solutions."

Primarily for sufferers of the genetic disease Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), the implant Argus II has been shown to restore limited reading capability of large conventional letters and short words when used with the camera. While reading should improve with future iterations of the Argus II, the current study shows how the Argus II could be adapted to provide an alternative and potentially faster method of text reading with the addition of letter recognition software. This ability to perform image processing in software prior to sending the signal to the implant is a unique advantage of Argus II.

Debate rages over Sudan's Bashir after "plot" arrests

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudan's information minister had one clear message after security agents moved in to arrest their former spy chief - that a plot had been uncovered, the culprits caught and the situation in the country was now "totally stable".

Khartoum did appear quiet a day later on Friday - but on the desert city's dusty streets the detention amplified a debate about the future of the country's leader, and posed new questions about who might one day unseat him.

President Omar Hassan al-Bashir has kept a near quarter-century hold on this African oil producer, drawing support from its all powerful military, security services and large parts of the devout, overwhelmingly Muslim population.

His speeches regularly referred to threats from outside - from the West, from Israel and from the International Criminal Court, which has indicted him over charges of atrocities in Darfur.

But the man arrested on Thursday on charges of plotting to "incite chaos" was Salah Gosh, once one of the most powerful figures in Bashir's inner circle, together with several other senior figures from army and security.

"He (Bashir) would always be worried ... that the opposition groups would be involved, but now it's coming from inside. There is a categorical difference there," said Magdi El Gizouli, a fellow at the Rift Valley Institute.

Gizouli said there were signs of frustration inside the military, where many who had fought Bashir's wars in Darfur and the south were itching for the old guard to move on.

"Inside the regime and army are many who want jobs. They are not young anymore. It's not about reforms. It's about power," he added.

Public unrest has also been growing over rising prices and growing inflation after South Sudan split away as an independent nation last year, under the terms of a peace deal, taking most of the country's oil reserves with it.

Diplomats and analysts in Sudan told Reuters they doubted those tensions had built up into an active military coup attempt.

The detentions were rather a warning shot to those inside the army, security and services and ruling party who might even be considering searching for a replacement for Bashir, they added.

"This is a power struggle inside the regime. It was a preemptive measure," said Faisal Mohammad Saleh, a prominent journalist. "I don't think the arrested people had planned anything yet. Maybe they made some phone calls or met, but this was a early stage."

HEALTH CONCERNS

Quieter questions were already circulating about Bashir's future after an official from his ruling National Congress Party said last year, in the wake of "Arab spring" protests, he would not seek re-election in the 2015 presidential election.

Speculation mounted after officials were forced to announce Bashir underwent throat surgery in Qatar in August when people in the street started wondering why he had stopped holding his famous public rallies.

Officials insist Bashir is healthy after undergoing a second operation in Saudi Arabia. But a reduction in his public appearances has kept people talking.

At an Islamist conference last week Sudan invited Muslim leaders from Egypt, Tunisia and further afield, but Bashir's seat was vacant for more than one hour at the opening ceremony.

When Bashir finally came, officials interrupted a speech to declare "the president of the republic is here".

The startling arrest of Gosh and the other officials, opened up another dimension in the speculation.

"You cannot stop the succession debate anymore. It's there and people wonder how fit their president is or whether he wants to run again at the next elections," said a Western diplomat.

"(Vice President Ali Osman) Taha has many supporters in the NCP but there are others in the army and NCP with ambitions too."

"WHO RUNS THIS COUNTRY?"

While details of the plot arrests remain unclear, analysts say the trigger could have been worries that once-loyal Islamists would stage protests after hopes for reforms were dashed at the Khartoum conference last week.

In papers circulated in mosques before the meeting, many had demanded to discuss fighting corruption or reforms at the forum of the Islamic Movement, a quasi-official organization meant to guide the NCP.

But hopes for changes were dashed when the government managed to push through its candidate, former minister al-Zubeir al-Hassan, as new secretary general.

"He is not a historical Islamist leader, he doesn't really have Islamic credentials," said Harry Verhoeven, a long-time Sudan watcher.

Thousands of mid-level army officers heeded calls by Muslim leaders to fight southern "infidels" during the country's decades-long civil war with South Sudan.

Many of them were furious when the peace deal that Bashir secured to end that conflict opened the door for southerners to secede from Sudan last year.

Former "mujahideen" have organized themselves into groups such as the "Saihun", or travelers in Arabic, to vent their anger against the government.

"I went fighting as a young man and I feel this government has run the country aground with their corruption. We have ministers who are not competent," said an Islamist, speaking to Reuters before the arrests were announced.

After the arrests, Islamists uploaded pictures of one of the army officers detained alongside Gosh - Wad Ibrahim, a civil war hero respectfully called "Emir of the Mujahideen".

Shops opened as usual in the morning before Friday prayers. At one mosque visited by Reuters the preacher did not mention the arrests.

Many Sudanese, used to political upheavals, wondered what will happen next. "Who is ruling this country," wrote a user on the "Saihun" website on Thursday as rumors were swirling around.

"I don't think they tried to stage a military coup," said 55-year-old Ibrahim Idriss, a food merchant in central Khartoum. "I'm not interested in it anyway. I worry more about corruption and officials who steal people's money."

behave leonore: Shopping and Product Reviews: Will Traditional ...

The popularity of online shopping has been seen by many as a threat to the existence of traditional shopping. Their argument is based on the recent widespread closure of established brands like Sears and Best Buy. But can we really say that traditional shopping is dying?

In 2011, even though the U.S economy was sluggish, shopping grew by 15% over the previous year. In addition, about 35% of Americans now have smartphones which enable them to purchase goods and services over the internet and this figure is expected to rise significantly in subsequent years. In actual fact, about half of smartphone users have used their phones for one purchase or the other. On Christmas day of 2011 alone, about 6.8 million iOs and Android smartphones were activated. Top internet retailer, Amazon, recorded a whooping net sale of $48.08 billion in 2011 which represents 40.6% increase over $32.20 billion recorded in 2010. This figure is expected to rise in 2012 and subsequent years. What then is the implication of all these to physical retailing?

Since many people now decide to shop over the internet due to the benefits derivable in doing so like convenience, easy access to market, price comparison, avoidance of crowd, better prices and so on, can we really say that that the traditional way of shopping is being threatened? In my own opinion, technology will enhance the traditional method and not kill it. The popularity of video cassette recorder (VCR) in the 80's was seen by many as a threat to movie theaters then, but today, the film industry has been strengthened by the new technology and the demand for films has increased.

Moreover, when the email became very popular, a lot people thought that the traditional postal service would die, but today, it is waxing stronger. The point I'm driving at here is that, if traditional shop owners can embrace new technology, shopping on the internet would not be a threat to them but a blessing.

If physical retailers can monitor shopping behavior through the use of Wi-Fi signals from smartphones, they would be able to compete favorably in a fast-changing world. They can use technology to measure loyalty, make better staffing decisions, improve store layouts, reduce wait times in checkout lines and so on. Online shopping has come to stay but it is not a threat to traditional shopping because many consumers still value some of its features like quality of customer service, the experience of trying and buying products, how products are displayed and so on.

Madonna Lawsuit In Russia Dismissed: Court Throws Out Case Seeking Damages After Singer's Pro-Gay Rights Speech

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia ? A Russian court on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit that sought millions of dollars in damages from Madonna for allegedly traumatizing minors by speaking up for gay rights during a concert in St. Petersburg.

The ruling came after a one-day hearing that bordered on the farcical. During it, plaintiffs claimed that Madonna's so-called "propaganda of perversion" would negatively affect Russia's birthrate and erode the nation's defense capability by depriving the country of future soldiers. At one point, the judge threatened to expel journalists from the courtroom if they laughed too much.

In the end, the Moskovsky district court in St. Petersburg threw out the Trade Union of Russian Citizens' lawsuit and the 333 million rubles ($10.7 million) it sought from the singer for allegedly exposing youths to "homosexual propaganda."

Madonna did not attend the trial, and her publicist Liz Rosenberg said Thursday the star wouldn't comment about it.

Anti-gay sentiment is strong in Russia, particularly in St. Petersburg, where local legislators passed a law in February that made it illegal to promote homosexuality to minors. Six months later, Madonna criticized the law on Facebook, then stood up for gay rights during a concert in St. Petersburg that drew fans as young as 12.

"Who will children grow up to be if they hear about the equal rights of the lesbian lobby and manly love with traditional sexual relations?" one of the plaintiffs, Darya Dedova, testified Thursday. "The death rate prevails over the birth rate in the West; young guys are becoming gender neutral."

The plaintiffs submitted evidence about gay culture drawn from Wikipedia pages, claiming that a real encyclopedia could not have articles about homosexuality.

"We aren't against homosexual people, but we are against the propaganda of perversion among minors," Dedova told the court. "We want to defend the values of a traditional family, which are currently in crisis in this country. Madonna violated our laws and she should be punished."

Madonna, who performed in Moscow and St. Petersburg in August as part of her world tour, also angered Russian officials by supporting jailed members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot. The American said during her Moscow concert that she would "pray for them," then turned around so the audience could see the words "Pussy Riot" written on her back. The singer also donned a ski mask similar to those worn by Pussy Riot.

Despite international outrage, three of that band's members were sentenced to two years in jail on hooliganism charges for performing a "punk prayer" at Moscow's main cathedral, during which they pleaded with the Virgin Mary to deliver Russia from President Vladimir Putin. One of the Pussy Riot members was later released from jail on appeal, but the other two were sent to prison camps to serve their sentences.

Thai-Inspired Mango Salad | Creative Sides for Lean Cuisine Frozen ...

You know how right before a holiday, you try to eat something completely different than whatever it is you?ll be indulging in on the big day itself?

Or is it just me that does that?

Thai-Inspired-Mango-Salad

Ahem anyhow. So, back to me?

On Thanksgiving Eve, I was in Sam?s Club scoping out what might be Black Friday get-out-of-bed-worthy, and while I was there, I ?decided to grab an opposite meal.

The opposite of Thanksgiving is Asian.?(According to my rules.)

Lean-Cuisine-Sams-Club

Soooooo, since Sam?s Club sells frozen meals (and everything else under the sun) in bulk, I obviously went home with Lean Cuisine times more than one. (A 6-pack, to be exact. Score.)

Why Lean Cuisine meals, you might ask?

Three reasons:

I love the way they taste.

They?re healthy and low-calorie, so I can add a side dish and still not feel guilty.

They have a loyalty program, and there are reward points in every box. ;)

Lean-Cuisine-asian-frozen-meals

Now about that side dish thing?. I could easily have made a simple tossed salad and called it quits.

Pish posh!

I wanted a creative side which would enhance the Asian flavors, so that?s how I ended up making a Thai-Inspired Mango Salad and wow, was it delicious!

Lean-Cuisine-Creative-Side

?Thai-Inspired Mango Salad

?

Ingredients

Fresh mixed greens (enough for 2 people)
Green mango (find one that?s very firm, not ripe)
Small red pepper (sliced thin or cubed)
1 cup bean sprouts
1 carrot, grated
1/2 cup cucumbers, sliced
1 pkg fresh basil (about 15 leaves)
3 T freshly squeezed lime juice
2 T Worcestershire sauce
1 T balsamic vinegar
1 T brown sugar
2 tsp Thai roasted red chili paste

Directions

1. Toss mango, red pepper, bean sprouts, and carrot in a salad bowl. Set aside.

2. Using a food processor or blender, pulse together basil, lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar and roasted red chili paste to make salad dressing. (If using a blender, it?s better to finely chop the basil before blending.)

3. Add cucumber slices on top.

The salad has both a sweetness and a kick to it, and it was an easy way to take a quick, convenient meal and elevate it to something just a little more special!

Afghanistan truck bomb kills two, foreign troops among 70 wounded

KABUL (Reuters) - A suicide truck bomb killed two people and wounded more than 70 in volatile eastern Afghanistan on Friday, officials said, with several foreign troops among those injured.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the bombing in Maidan Shahr, the provincial capital of Wardak province, 35 km (22 miles) southwest of the capital, Kabul, but it was unclear what the target was.

A spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said fewer than six coalition troops had sustained minor injuries in the bombing close to the provincial governor's office, but gave no further details.

The bomber detonated explosives packed into a water tanker truck about 40 meters from a joint operations centre run by Afghan and coalition troops, Ahmad Wali, a senior police official, told Reuters by telephone.

In a text message sent to journalists, the Taliban claimed responsibility.

The United States has a sizable troop contingent based in Wardak province, where a twin suicide bombing targeting a NATO base killed eight civilians and four Afghan policemen in September.

Wardak saw the worst single incident suffered by foreign forces in the 11-year war when the Taliban shot down a transport helicopter last year, killing 38 troops, 30 of whom were American, mostly elite Navy SEALs.
