There is another reason not listed on the list to ask a small amount of money for an animal: vet care. This applies especially to small animals (which are often considered as toys that don't need batteries), but also to cats and dogs. If a person truly can't afford a few bucks (something reasonable, not a $300 "adoption" fee), how are they going to afford vet care? When it comes to small animals like guinea pigs, people frequently just won't take them to the vet even when they do recognize that they are ill. They'll just let the animal die or give them away when they develop a health problem.
