D-Day for al-Qaida in Somalia? Last bastion attacked

By NBC News wire services

MOGADISHU, Somalia --?Troops launched an amphibious assault before dawn Friday on the al-Qaida militant group al-Shabab's last stronghold in Somalia.

Other African Union forces were traveling overland to link up with the joint Kenyan-Somali force in the port city of Kismayo.

The commander of the U.N-backed African Union troops, Lt. Gen. Andrew Gutti, said the aim was to "liberate the people of Kismayo to enable them to lead their lives in peace, stability and security."

Col. Cyrus Oguna, the Kenyan military's top spokesman, said the attack met minimal resistance, but al-Shabab denied that the city had fallen and said fighting was taking place.

Oguna told The Associated Press that al-Shabab, which formally merged with al-Qaida in February, had incurred "heavy losses" but that Kenyan forces have not yet had any injuries or deaths.

"We came from the beach side and we're moving towards the main city. Our surveillance aircraft are monitoring every event taking place on the ground," he told Reuters.

"For now, we're not everywhere. We've taken a large part of it without resistance, I don't see anything major happening," he said.

Born in the USA, but now among Somalia's Islamist terrorists

Residents in Kismayo, a city of about 193,000 people, contacted by The Associated Press said that Kenyan troops had taken control of the port, but not the whole city.

"Al-Shabab fighters are on the streets and heading toward the front line in speeding cars. Their radio is still on the air and reporting the war," resident Mohamed Haji told The Associated Press. Haji said that helicopters were hitting targets in the town in southeastern Somalia.

At an international one-day summit Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron said the world would "pay a price" if it fails to help Somalia overcome terrorism, piracy and starvation. ITV's Lee Comley reports.?

Another resident, Ismail Suglow, told Reuters that he could hear shelling from the ships and that the rebels were responding with anti-aircraft guns.

"We saw seven ships early in the morning and now their firing looks like lightning and thunder. Al-Shabab have gone towards the beach. The ships poured many AU troops on the beach," he added.

Expert: War on terror at 'critical' point as al-Qaida looks to regroup in Africa

On Thursday, residents said planes had dropped leaflets on Kismayo warning civilians to evacuate within 24 hours, Reuters reported.?More than 10,000 residents fled Kismayo in the last several weeks.

Resident Faduma Abdulle said Friday that she is now leaving too.

She said al-Shabab made an announcement on its radio station Friday to trick residents into moving toward the invading troops.

"They told residents through their radio to loot a Kenyan ship that washed up on the coast, but instead the residents who rushed there were attacked by helicopters," she said. "Some of them have died but I don't know how many. The situation is tense and many are fleeing. It's a dangerous situation."

A U.S. military spokesman, Lt. Cdr. Dave Hecht, said the U.S. Africa Command, known as AFRICOM, is closely monitoring the situation but that "we are not participating in Kenya's military activities in the region."

Militants: Taking city not 'a piece of cake'
Al-Shabab said it would not give up Kismayu easily.

"Going into Kismayo is not a piece of cake. We are still fighting them on the beach where they landed," Sheik Abdiasis Abu Musab, al-Shabab's spokesman for military operations, told Reuters on Friday. "For us, this is just the beginning, our troops are spread everywhere."

Oguna said the assault is part of a four-prong attack involving Kenyan forces currently in villages outside Kismayo.

The amphibious assault landed between 10:30 p.m. Thursday and 2 a.m. Friday local time (3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thursday ET)?, he said. Some of the troops had night-vision goggles, he said.

Somali Olympic chief killed in Mogadishu suicide blast

African Union troops pushed al-Shabab out of Mogadishu in August 2011, ending four years of control of the capital by the fighters.

The Ugandan and Burundian troops that make up the bulk of the African Union force in Mogadishu have slowly been taking control of towns outside of Mogadishu.

The expanding control by AU troops sent al-Shabab fighters fleeing south toward Kismayo, north to other regions of Somalia and across the Gulf of Aden to Yemen, according to American and African Union officials.

Kenya police: Imminent attack by suicide bombers thwarted

Al-Shabab still holds sway across many small, poor villages of southern Somalia. The loss of Kismayo would be significant.

The militants taxed goods coming into its port. Al-Shabab lost its major source of financing last year when it was pushed out of Bakara market in Mogadishu, where it also charged taxes.

The march toward Kismayo by the Kenyan forces has been nearly a year in the making.

Masked 'goons' kill at least 17 in attacks on churches in Kenya

Kenyan troops entered Somalia last October after a string of kidnappings inside neighboring Kenya, including of Westerners in and around the beach resort town of Lamu, which is also seeing the construction of a new port and could one day be final point of a new oil pipeline from South Sudan.

Kenyan forces were bogged down by rain and poor roads for months but have making slow and steady progress toward Kismayo in recent weeks.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Tips to Help You in Purchasing the Right Paramotor

If you have plans of buying a paramotor soon, you should read through this article. Here, you will get tips that will help you in purchasing the best paramotor available in the market. The market houses different types of paramotors. As a result, a beginner i.e. a person who has no prior experience of powered paragliding often finds is extremely difficult to choose the paramotor model that will suit his needs the best. You will come across paramotors with basic, intermediate and advanced features. There are ample alternatives available even for paramotor accessories. As every paramotor model varies from each other when it comes to their features and accompanying accessories, you will have to set your own priorities before buying any particular product. Follow the tips provided below to understand what would be the best paramotor option for you. ?

Check and ensure whether or not the paramotor is in good condition: If you have enough funds, it is always sensible to opt for a new paramotor. However, if you have to follow a fixed budget, you can also buy a used one. You may have decided to buy a new or a used paramotor, but you should not make the final deal without checking the condition of the machine. This will make sure that you do not end up paying for a paramotor with damaged parts. Check the paramotor?s motor, wings and frame for damages and vulnerability to breakage. A paramotor with flawed parts is more susceptible to accidents than a paramotor in perfect condition. If you are not confident enough about your ability of checking a paramotor?s condition, you can seek the guidance of a paragliding expert.

?

Choose the paramotor model according to your body weight: Earlier, it has been mentioned that features of paramotors vary from one model to another. According to paragliding experts, you should always consider your body weight while choosing a paramotor model. Taking your body weight into account is particularly important while deciding on the wing size of the machine. Ideally, a paramotor that will be operated by a lightweight pilot must have smaller wings than a paramotor that will be operated by a heavyweight pilot.

Check the paramotor?s wing size: This step is extremely essential as a paramotor?s wing size decides how high it will fly. If you have the desire of reaching high altitudes while riding a powered paraglider, your paramotor must have M4 wings. These wings generate more thrust and allow the pilot to achieve great elevation while flying. The paramotors with M3 wings are meant for people who are not aspiring to reach higher altitudes while paramotoring.

Select the right wing type: Paramotor wings can be of two types, reflex and traditional. A paragliding expert will always suggest you to buy paramotors carrying reflex wings. The primary reason behind this is that the reflex PPG wings are sturdier and more enduring than the traditional ones. Unlike the paramotors equipped with reflex wings, the paramotors with traditional wings are extremely susceptible to collapses, especially when flying high.

Fiona Apple's 'Alarming' Weight Loss Could Signal - RadarOnline.com

Pacific Coast News

By Debbie Emery - Radar Reporter

Until last week, Fiona Apple was best known for her Grammy-award winning music career, but now the singer's health and legal problems are at the forefront of her fans' attention.

Apple looked sickly skinny when she performed at a concert in New Orleans on Tuesday night, and her emaciated appearance and recent drug arrest have sparked concern among health experts that she may be struggling to deal with the stress in her life, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

As we previously reported, the Every Single Night star was busted for marijuana possession on September 19 when it was found on her tour bus during a routine check at a border stop in the Texas town of Sierra Blanca.

PHOTOS: Sexy Stars Who Have Been Arrested

While the 35-year-old spoke of drinking ?marijuana-laced lemonade? and smoking pot with writer Dan Lee earlier this year, her shockingly thin figure doesn't look typical of a stoner, nutritionist Dr. Fred Pescatore, who has not treated the singer, told RadarOnline.com in an exclusive interview.

"She does look gaunt and pot is usually not the only culprit in that situation," he speculated.

"It looks as if she is in a downward spiral and that may be causing her to be apathetic to how she appears," said Dr. Pescatore, who estimates that the 5'2" singer has lost 30 pounds and plummeted to a low of 90 pounds.

PHOTOS: Celebrities Who Have Admitted To Smoking Pot

It is not the first time that Fiona has undergone a dramatic weight loss. Back in 1997, it was speculated that Apple suffered from an eating disorder with The New Yorker claiming she ?looked like an underfed Calvin Klein model.?

Psychotherapist Jessica Aronson, who has not treated Apple, told Radar that she is concerned the singer, who admitted to battling an eating disorder in her teens following a horrific sexual assault when she was only 12 years old, may be returning to old bad habits to help deal with her current situation.

PHOTOS: Celebrity Mugshots

"I would guess she is numbing herself from something? - most likely feelings," said Aronson. "Being in the public eye and getting arrested for drug use brings attention to herself and highlights whatever difficulty she is going through.

"Her pictures certainly look alarming and concerning," revealed the psychotherapist.

World's largest oil trader flouts Iran sanctions

Denis Balibouse / Reuters

By Luke Pachymuthu, Randy Fabi and Chen Aizhu, Reuters

SINGAPORE/BEIJING?- Vitol, the world's largest oil trader, is buying and selling Iranian fuel oil, undermining Western efforts to choke the flow of petrodollars to Tehran and put pressure on Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program.

Vitol last month bought 2 million barrels of fuel oil, used for power generation, from Iran and offered it to Chinese traders, Reuters established in interviews with 10 oil trading, industry and shipping sources in Southeast Asia, China and the Middle East. A spokesman for Vitol declined to comment.

Swiss-based Vitol is not obliged to comply with a ban imposed in July by the European Union on trading oil with Iran because Switzerland decided not to match EU and U.S. sanctions against Tehran.

The company earlier in the year stopped trading Iranian crude oil from its main European offices before the July 1 EU embargo deadline. But the trading sources said it has continued to deal in Iranian fuel oil from the Middle East.

The tale of the cargo of Iranian fuel oil involves tanker tracking systems being switched off, two ship-to-ship transfers, and blending of the oil with fuel from another source to alter the cargo's physical specification.

Privately-held Vitol SA is led by its long-time CEO Ian Taylor, a Briton. Taylor was among leading donors to Britain's ruling Conservative Party named in March by the Prime Minister's office as having dined with David Cameron at his private apartment in Downing Street amid the fall-out from a "cash for access" party funding scandal. Britain is a vociferous critic of Tehran's nuclear program and a leading advocate of the EU sanctions.

Swiss loophole
Vitol has said previously it is in compliance with sanctions against Iran, but has declined to say whether or not it would follow the strict EU regulations rather than Switzerland's.

Rival Swiss-based traders Glencore and Trafigura said in July they had halted all Iranian oil trade, even though the Swiss government opted against following measures imposed by Washington and Brussels.

The measures have halved OPEC member Iran's crude oil export revenues, devaluing the rial currency and bringing financial hardship to millions of Iranians.

On top of the EU ban, Iran's four biggest oil buyers - China, India, Japan and South Korea - have reduced their imports by at least a fifth to secure exemptions from the threat of U.S. financial sanctions on their companies.

Vitol last year earned record revenue of $297 billion, a near-five-fold increase since 2004. It does not reveal profits.

Fuel oil is a small part of its trading portfolio, accounting for $24 billion of revenue last year compared to $105 billion from crude and $100 billion from other refined products.

Profit margins on oil trade are typically very low, but traders said Iran's difficulties in finding buyers because of sanctions are likely to have made for a fat profit margin for trading its fuel oil.

Ship-to-ship
Vitol acquired the Iranian fuel oil early this month in a ship-to-ship transfer off Malaysia from a National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) vessel, the Leadership, onto a Vitol-chartered tanker, the Ticen Ocean.

The Ticen Ocean was sub-contracted by Vitol for floating storage off the Malaysian port of Tanjung Pelepas from Titan Petrochemicals, a Hong Kong company which itself hired it from shipowner Frontline of Norway.

Frontline said Titan had told it the ship was not used to store Iranian oil. "Our only counterpart in this matter is Titan and they have said it is not correct that there has been Iranian oil on the boat," said Frontline CEO Jens Martin Jensen.

Titan did not return calls or emails seeking comment.

The Leadership left Iran's main oil export terminal at Kharg Island during the week of August 23, passing through the Strait of Malacca before disappearing from freight tracking systems off the Malaysian coast on September 4. Since sanctions were imposed, Iranian vessels have frequently switched off the onboard 'black-box' transponders used in the shipping industry to monitor vessel movements.

Industry sources in Tanjung Pelepas who monitor shipping transfer operations in Malaysian waters said Vitol later brought alongside another tanker, the Speranza, to replace the Ticen Ocean as floating storage. The Speranza, owned by China's Sino Shipping Holdings, arrived at Tanjung Pelepas on September 13-14, Reuters data shows.

Vitol also transferred some of its fuel oil from the Ticen Ocean between September 11-12 to another vessel, the Kamari I, according to Reuters data. That cargo was delivered to Vitol's storage terminal on the Malaysian island of Tanjung Bin, inside Tanjung Pelepas port, one trading source said.

'Special blend'
Traders said the company then blended the oil in storage with fuel oil sourced from Europe, calling it a "special blend" and offered it to Chinese traders. Reuters was given a copy of the specifications of the cargo on offer.

Vitol first asked a $30 premium to Singapore's benchmark 180-centistoke fuel oil price, said a Chinese industry executive who manages some of China's many small, independent refineries, known as teapots. That would have valued the 2-million-barrel cargo at about $250 million.

"Because the offer was too high, our people didn't really carry on the talks," the Chinese executive said. "Vitol also appeared not in a hurry to sell, so was not being aggressive."

Two Asian refinery buyers who were then offered the oil said the asking price was cut to a $12-$14 premium to Singapore benchmark prices, or around $175 million in total.

"Vitol is offering the cargo as a special blend to teapot refiners in Shandong," said a China-based trader. "No one's agreed to buy the Vitol cargo. I declined because I wasn't sure of the quality and specifications."

At the time of publication it is not known whether Vitol had agreed a deal to sell the oil.

Insurance
Vitol's use of the Ticen Ocean to store Iranian oil could put the tanker's insurance at risk. The vessel is insured by the North of England P&I Association.

The EU's oil embargo bans EU insurers who underwrite around 90 percent of the world's tanker fleet from providing cover for ships carrying Iranian oil.

Mike Salthouse, director of North Insurance Management, which acts as manager for the North of England P&I Association, said it would not provide cover for tankers storing or transporting Iranian oil.

"We would not expect to continue to insure any fleet actively engaged in this trade," he said, but declined comment specifically on the Ticen Ocean.

Gut bacteria could could play key role in development of type 2 diabetes

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? The number of people suffering from type 2 diabetes world-wide has risen rapidly in recent years, and scientists estimate that just as many people could be suffering from the illness without realising it. New research now indicates that your gut bacteria can reveal whether you suffer from the disease.

"We have demonstrated that people with type 2 diabetes have a high level of pathogens in their intestines," says professor Jun Wang from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology and Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research.

Important intestinal bacteria

The 1.5 kilograms of bacteria that we each carry in our intestines have an enormous impact on our health and well being. The bacteria normally live in a sensitive equilibrium but if this equilibrium is disrupted our health could suffer. In the new study, scientists examined the intestinal bacteria of 345 people from China, of which 171 had type 2 diabetes. The team managed to identify clear biological indicators that someday could be used in methods that provide faster and earlier diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.

The research, which was recently published in the scientific journal Nature, also demonstrated that people with type 2 diabetes have a more hostile bacterial environment in their intestines, which can increase resistance to different medicines.

Similar studies carried out on sufferers of type 2 diabetes in Denmark also discovered a significant imbalance in the function of their intestinal bacteria and composition. Future Danish studies will examine whether intestinal bacteria is already abnormal in people that are deemed to be at risk of developing diabetes.

"We are going to transplant gut bacteria from people that suffer from type 2 diabetes into mice and examine whether the mice then develop diabetes," says another of the lead scientists behind the project, professor Oluf Borbye Pedersen from the University of Copenhagen and centre director at LuCamp, the Lundbeck Foundation Centre for Applied Medical Genomics in Personalised Disease Prediction, Prevention and Care.

International research team investigates gut bacteria

By working together, a team scientists from the University of Copenhagen and the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) was able to make to several breakthroughs in the field of 'metagenomics'.

Scientists working on the EU research project MetaHIT have uncovered more than 3.3 million genes from gut bacteria found in people from Spain and Denmark. These genes could play a key role in understanding and treating a range of serious illnesses. According to Professor Karsten Kristiansen from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology, the recent discovery is an important step in the comprehensive international research that is currently underway to investigate the interplay between intestinal bacteria and health.

"The European and Chinese working on the MetaHIT project were able to make important new discoveries about the relationship between intestinal bacteria and health. The new discovery indicates a possible connection between type 2 diabetes and the intestinal bacteria in Chinese people," Kristiansen says.

"It is important to point out that our discovery demonstrates a correlation. The big question now is whether the changes in gut bacteria can affect the development of type 2 diabetes or whether the changes simply reflect that the person is suffering from type 2 diabetes."

Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter explores the moon in 3-D

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Scientists using the camera aboard NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter are acquiring stereo images of the moon in high resolution (0.5 to 2 meters/pixel) that provide 3-D views of the surface from which high resolution topographic maps are made.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera Narrow Angle Camera (LROC NAC) team from the University of Arizona and Arizona State University are currently developing a processing system to automatically generate anaglyphs from most of these stereo pairs. An anaglyph is an image that can be viewed in 3-D using red-blue/green glasses.

LROC acquires stereo images by targeting a location on the ground and taking an image from one angle on one orbit, and from a different angle on a subsequent orbit.

Anaglyphs are used to better understand the 3-D structure of the lunar surface. The LROC NAC anaglyphs make lunar features such as craters, volcanic flows, lava tubes and tectonic features jump out in 3-D. LROC NAC anaglyphs will make detailed images of the moon's surface accessible in 3-D to the general public. The anaglyphs will be released through the LROC web site at http://lroc.sese.asu.edu/ and the NASA LRO web site at www.nasa.gov/lro as they become available.

A place to drop your keys, mail, and phone is a must in an entry. Take the opportunity to bring both style and function into your home with a revamped thrift store console or Craigslist dresser placed in your foyer. Style it up with art, lamps, or a tray to corral the mail and keys.

Consoles and Dressers(Green cabinet from Young House Love; Painted entry console from Design*Sponge; Garage sale score from Decor Chick; 70s dresser turned console from Sweet Pickins Furniture)

Entries need not be merely functional, they can be stylish too, all with pieces scored on a weekend treasure hunt or reinvented with new stain or paint. I hope you all are enjoying these inspirational finds. Next week we?ll take a peek at some very cool ideas for turning secondhand finds into chic dining room accents. Stay tuned!

National grocery chain Trader Joe?s is voluntarily recalling ?peanut butter that has been linked to 29 salmonella cases in 18 states.

?Out of an abundance of caution, we have removed all?Trader Joe?s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter from sale, due to pending health-related inquiries,? Trader Joe?s said in a statement.

An investigation by the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control determined the peanut butter was the likely source of the outbreak. Officials from the FDA and CDC briefed Trader Joe?s on Thursday, prompting the grocer to voluntarily recall the product, the FDA said in a statement issued Saturday.

The list of states that reported the illnesses was not released, but the state health departments in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and North Carolina reported cases, according to The Associated Press.

Anyone with the product is encouraged to either return it to Trader Joe?s for a full refund or dispose of it.

Salmonella causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain 12 to 72 hours after infection. Young children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems are most at risk to developing severe infections.

Hmm... you're wanting to take your vote back?

Well, that's a bit tricky. See, we do a lot of stuff with your vote, using it to work out the popularity of what you voted for, compare that to all the other things voted on, tally up our leaderboard, work out your reputation. Someday we'll do a little cartoon showing just how hard your vote is working.

Anyway, taking votes back messes all that up, so we give you five minutes, in case you just mis-clicked. After that we've got to say no take-backs. Luckily, votes are free, so feel free to throw them around left and right wherever you see fit.

iPhone 5 / iOS 6 app update roundup: new versions for a taller world

iPhone 5 iOS 6 app roundup what's big, what's new

Call it a hunch, but we suspect that at least a few of you picked up an iPhone 5 today, or at least made the leap to iOS 6. If you're in either position, you may be wondering just what apps to feed Apple's flagship (or that fresh new firmware) once it's ready to go. We've got a quick-hit list of titles that have been updated to take advantage of the tall display and new OS that go beyond Apple's own work. The biggest upgrades of the lot come from keynote darling CNN as well as Flipboard: both have done more than add extra columns on the iPhone 5, offering an interface you won't see on any mere 3.5-inch iPhone. Some bread-and-butter apps have made the launch week cut as well, such as Facebook and Twitter.

There's even more if you're willing to dig deep. Third-party Twitter client Tweetbot beat the official app to the punch by days, and we've likewise spotted updates to Evernote, its rival Remember the Milk and Yelp. We know some apps aren't fully iPhone 5- or iOS 6-native -- Instagram, for example, and most anything from Google -- but it's apparent that the holdouts are increasingly the exception, rather than the rule. Did you catch any other noteworthy apps that received a boost in recent hours? Let fellow owners know in the comments.

Wall Street retreats on economic worries

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks declined on Thursday as sluggish economic figures from around the world reminded investors about the hurdles that need to be overcome even as central banks try to prop up their respective economies with strong stimulus measures.

Manufacturing in China contracted for an 11th straight month in September, according to a private sector survey of factory managers; in the euro zone, a downturn in activity in the service sector steepened this month at the fastest pace since July 2009.

The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits fell last week, but from an upwardly revised number the prior weak, with the underlying tone of the report pointing to some weakening in the labor market.

A separate report showed factory activity in the U.S. mid-Atlantic region shrank less than expected for September, but was the fifth straight monthly decline.

The S&P 500 has rallied more than 5 percent since the start of August, on growing expectations for central bank stimulus, which culminated in the U.S. Federal Reserve's announcement last week of a third quantitative easing plan.

"There was a lot of optimism and excitement about the news out of Europe and then the news about QE3, or QE forever, and this is probably a little bit of a reassessment of that," said Philip Wagner, senior vice president at Bryn Mawr Trust in Devon, Pennsylvania.

"You've got a question here of whether did things run ahead of themselves a little bit too fast - you look at the data here today, specifically, nothing is a positive surprise so it doesn't really give the bulls more enthusiasm."

Transportation stocks, sensitive to the nation's economic fortunes, were among the worst performers, with the Dow Jones Transportation average <.djt> dropping 2.1 percent.

Railroad company Norfolk Southern Corp said weaker shipments of coal and merchandise as well as lower fuel-surcharge revenue would reduce its third-quarter earnings compared with a year earlier. Norfolk shares slumped 7.3 percent to $67.40.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> dropped 44.49 points, or 0.33 percent, to 13,533.47. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> lost 7.10 points, or 0.49 percent, to 1,453.95. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> declined 17.92 points, or 0.56 percent, to 3,164.70.

UBS raised its target level for the S&P 500 by the end of 2012 to 1,525 from 1,375 Thursday, saying equity markets will climb after aggressive monetary easing by central banks.

"Over the short run, we believe that the 'risk on' trade will continue, with a rotation into the most volatile and economically sensitive stocks," said UBS's chief U.S. equity strategist Jonathan Golub in a research note.

Retailers' shares also fell. Bed, Bath & Beyond tumbled 7.9 percent to $63.36 after the company posted quarterly results that narrowly missed Wall Street estimates on account of higher costs.

Fellow retailer J.C. Penney Co Inc slid 8.1 percent to $26.74 after Chief Executive Ron Johnson said new shops within stores are doing much better than other parts of its department stores, but it was "way too early to draw conclusions" as the retailer is still rolling out the strategy.

The Morgan Stanley retail index <.mvr> declined 1.2 percent.

Let's Welcome to LCM Blog ? Our newest DIY Contributors!

Hello new friends, and readers!

I am so beyond excited to be blogging for Lilac City Momma, and to be able to reach out to a whole new group of people whom I can share all my fun Mommy adventures with! My name is Caroline, and I am a 24 year-old Mom from Spokane, WA. I have lived in 15 different states, but I love calling the Pacific Northwest my new home. I can tell you one thing, I?ve never seen so many seasons!

I have a 2 year old little boy named Hunter, who is my reason for getting out of bed every day, and why I?m so thankful for, (no matter how crazy), our little family at night. Being a SAHM is grueling sometimes, and I?ve worked hard to fill our family home with memories. I grew up in a house full of DIY?ers, antique furniture, good food, and family. Being raised in the South, it was sort of ingrained in my identity to be a do-it-all kind of woman. Thankfully I?m not, because I have learned so much and have so much more to learn.

My main hobbies are DIY, crafting, and baking, to fill my time when I?m not on 24 hour Mommy duty. I love traveling, all over the U.S.A, and bringing things home from my travels to add to our menagerie. I collect old records, any genre, because I adore album artwork and liner notes. My greatest accomplishments are mostly projects that I?ve completed myself, and I am definitely in the school that, one man?s trash is another man?s treasure. I truly believe that anyone can do it with a little effort, and I have tons of tips/tricks to share that I?ve picked up along the way. (Remember, this is coming from a girl who before she was married, or a Mommy, could burn a pot of boiling water and had no idea what a Michael?s even looked like!)

I hope that I can share with everyone along with the mishaps, the sweet satisfaction that comes from completing projects that can make a house your home while doing it on a budget.

Thank you so much for reading. I can?t wait to share my adventures with you, with my own little side of Southern hospitality!

- Caroline

I am a busy Midwest Momma of 3 amazing daughters, and a wife to one of Indianapolis? greatest Paramedics!! I work full time as a Momma, and a Medical Assistant. I work for a busy Family Practice MD (by the way is the most amazing person inside and out), who practices semi-alternative medicine. I believe in what I practice, I see the outcomes everyday, of taking care of yourself, does really pay off. As someone who has food allergies and sensitivities, everyday is a struggle to eat well. I have been quite ?crafty? with food. Re-thinking everyday meals, and making them gluten free, and delish!! I am excited to share some of my ?secret? recipes!

I love, love, love, photography, especially black and white. My daughters are my inspiration! I always have a camera with me, either my Nikon (love), or my phone (which does take pretty amazing pics). My husband is always saying, ?enough Allison?, well, I do not think you can EVER have enough photo?s. I just want to always have permanent memories. I want my girls to always have visual memories, so someday they can look back and say, ?Oh yeah, I remember that!!? You never know when it is going to be your last photo.

I Love to craft, re-purpose, sew, anything. Sometimes I think Goodwill and Hobby Lobby are my second homes. Really I have thought about working at both stores, but I know my direct deposit, would be actually be a direct withdrawal! In between softball practices, laundry, and cooking, I always find time to be crafty. Always find time to sit and sew, or re-purpose something. The girls and I could spend hours ?craftin? and we take over much of the front room/kitchen when we do to!!

I am so excited to be a contributor on Lilac City Momma!! I am looking forward to many new adventures that lie ahead with all of you!!
