Deadly Taliban Kabul attack highlights US reliance on private contractors

Eight private contractors were killed in a Taliban attack in Kabul Saturday, serving as a sharp reminder of the US military's heavy ? and controversial ? reliance on contractors.

A day after a Taliban suicide bomb killed 12 Americans in a NATO convoy in Kabul, the military has yet to release details about the victims, but it appears that eight of them were civilian contractors.

Had all the Americans killed been soldiers, the attack would have resulted in the fourth largest single day loss for American forces in more than a decade of war here.

The death of eight contractors alongside NATO soldiers stands as a sharp reminder of the heavy reliance the US military and NATO forces have placed on private contractors to wage this war.

Throughout the American-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, civilians have played a vital role doing everything from running cafeterias and laundry services to training local militaries and operating drones.

With the US reliant on an all-volunteer military, it?s unlikely that the US could have sustained more than a decade of foreign wars without these contractors. However, as contractors have become increasingly involved with combat operations, their role in America?s wars has become ever more controversial.

?Information about this aspect of the war only comes out when something happens or goes wrong, but all in all it?s a very secretive and not transparent part of the war,? says Thomas Ruttig, co-director of the Afghanistan Analysts Network in Kabul. The recent bombing ?should be used as an opportunity to discuss their role, and also better define their role so it becomes more transparent what they?re doing over here.?

In Afghanistan, the US Defense Department alone employs nearly as many private contractors as there are US military personnel here. As of March, there were 90,000 private contractors working for the DoD, while there were about 99,000 US service members deployed here, according to the Brookings Afghanistan Index put out by the Washington-based Brookings Institution. This figure does not include private contractors working for other government agencies in Afghanistan.

Although NATO forces have made training the Afghan Army and police one of their major priorities here, they are still reliant on approximately 2,765 private contractors to act as trainers.

While the nature of many of these contractors? work remains unclear, there is evidence that some may be involved with direct combat operations against the insurgents here. Others support counterinsurgency efforts through training local forces, installing and maintaining surveillance equipment, and supporting intelligence operations.

With so many civilians on the battlefield, determining what makes a combatant or a civilian in Afghanistan has become more ambiguous, especially since NATO forces adopted the counterinsurgency doctrine.

Counterinsurgency strategy relies heavily on reconstruction efforts, such as road building projects. These activities used to be the mainstay of civilian agencies in places like Afghanistan, but now many of these projects are done in the interest of supporting the military?s counterinsurgency goals rather than for entirely humanitarian purposes.

As a result, even private contractors not employed directly by NATO or the Defense Department may find themselves working in support of military goals.

For Afghans, the vast sums foreign forces spend on contracting is a growing point of contention.

?I think that when the Americans have the same number of civilians as they do military forces it?s a waste of money, especially since America is also facing an economic crisis,? says Mahmoud Khan, a member of parliament from Kandahar province. ?From the beginning, they needed to send Afghans to foreign countries to give them degrees. If they?d done that there would have been professional Afghan advisers who could have worked here forever.?

Appeals court upholds dismissal of elephant suit (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A federal appeals court on Friday upheld the dismissal of a lawsuit brought by animal rights activists that claims the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus abuses its elephants.

The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington agreed with a lower court judge that the Animal Protection Institute and a former Ringling employee Tom Ryder did not have the legal standing to sue the circus. The lower court found that Ryder was "essentially a paid plaintiff" because he received at least $190,000 from the animal rights activists pursuing the case.

The lawsuit claimed the circus is violating the elephants' protection under the Endangered Species Act with the use of bullhooks for training and prolonged chaining during train rides between shows.

Feld Entertainment Inc. argued the elephants are not hurt and that the instruments are necessary to keep the animals under control and protect public safety. The Vienna, Va.-based company runs the circus and has an elephant sanctuary in Florida.

Feld attorney John Simpson said the appellate ruling supports the company's $20 million racketeering lawsuit against Ryder, animal rights groups and their attorneys that claims they committed bribery, obstruction of justice and other illegal acts in filing the elephant suit. Simpson said the purpose of the company's suit is to keep animal rights groups from using the federal court system to pursue "radical agendas."

"Feld Entertainment is the target today and some other businesses are going to be targets tomorrow," Simpson said in a telephone interview. "And at some point it has to stop."

The Animal Protection Institute declined to comment on the ongoing litigation. But they are asking a judge to dismiss Feld's racketeering suit, calling it "a transparent effort to stifle any criticism of FEI's elephant treatment practices" and to bankrupt and punish the animal rights groups.

Too Much Drinking May Raise Lung Cancer Risk: Study (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Oct. 27 (HealthDay News) -- While smoking has long been linked to cancer, its frequent companion, drinking, may be as well, a new study suggests.

Three new studies presented at a medical meeting this week find a link between heavy boozing and a rise in risk for the number one cancer killer.

On the other hand, studies also suggest that heavier people are less likely to develop lung cancer than smaller folk, and black tea might help ward of the disease, as well.

The findings were to be presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, Oct. 22-26, in Honolulu.

More Americans die from lung cancer than any other form, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2007, the most recent year for which statistics are available, more than 203,000 people in the United States were diagnosed with lung cancer, and nearly 159,000 died.

In one study presented at the meeting, Dr. Stanton Siu and colleagues at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, Calif., looked at the diets and lifestyles of more than 126,000 people first surveyed between 1978 and 1985. They then tracked their incidence of lung cancer through 2008.

The team found that having more than three alcoholic drinks per day upped lung cancer risk, with a slightly higher risk ascribed to beer consumption versus wine or liquor. Specifically, compared to teetotalers, people who had three or more drinks daily were 30 percent more likely to develop lung cancer, with a 70 percent rise in risk if the drink of preference was beer.

One expert stressed, however, that it's tough to tease out drinking from another, even more carcinogenic habit, smoking, since the two often go together.

"Smoking remains an overwhelming factor, but . . . heavy drinking, whether it's the alcohol itself, or that heavy drinking is a surrogate for hanging out in smoky bars and getting more smoke, I don't know," said Dr. Norman Edelman, chief medical officer of the American Lung Association, who was not involved in any of the studies.

In another intriguing finding from the study, a higher body mass index (BMI), which indicates overweight or obesity, was linked to a reduction in the odds for lung malignancies.

The finding may not mean that packing on extra pounds insulates one against lung cancer, however. Edelman noted that being overweight or obese is typically associated with poorer health, while "people who are sick weigh little," he said. So, the results may just mean that the heavier study participants haven't suffered the ill effects of their lifestyle -- yet.

In a separate study also slated for presentation at the meeting, researchers from the Czech Republic found that among non-smoking women, regular black tea consumption appeared to lower lung cancer risk by about 31 percent, and higher amounts of fruit in the diet was also linked to lowered lung cancer risk for both genders.

Edelman and Dr. Mark Rosen, chief of the division of pulmonary/critical care and sleep medicine at the North Shore-LIJ Health System in New Hyde Park, N.Y., cautioned that all of the study results need to be replicated before being taken seriously.

"They show some interesting associations, but that doesn't mean they're necessarily factual," Rosen said. "If you put a lot of data into a computer, you're going to find some things come out [linked] just by chance. Associations are interesting, but they all require further studies."

Experts also note that research presented at scientific meetings is considered preliminary and has not been peer-reviewed.

Maybe there?s something to snake oil after all. A mix of compounds called fatty acids identified in pythons can spur an exercise-like boost in the size of mouse hearts.

In a test of basic biology, the three fatty acids identified in the blood of Burmese pythons boosted the mass of a heart chamber in lab mice by 10 percent in just a week, researchers report in the Oct. 28 Science. The snakes naturally enlarge their own hearts by some 40 percent in two to three days after eating one of their huge but rare meals. Between meals, python hearts and many other organs shrivel again.

Enlarging heart tissue can be a danger sign for humans. Yet the growth seen in the mice looks more like an athlete?s healthful heart growth than a heart disease patient?s worrisome one, says research leader Leslie A. Leinwand of the University of Colorado Boulder. ?We used the extreme biology of a snake to create a beneficial type of cardiac enlargement in mammals,? she says.

Mice, unlike pythons, nibble food steadily and thus shouldn?t need sudden heart growth to cope with huge, rare feasts, says Gerald Dorn of Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, a cardiologist who studies the molecular processes of heart enlargement. So the mouse response in the new study suggests that the research team has uncovered some central stimulating factor common across species, Dorn says. The study is ?incredibly promising,? he says.

Leinwand and her colleagues had hoped their snake research would reveal clues to possible medical therapies for people with heart disease. However, many questions remain about how the snakes? fatty acids actually work to trigger heart muscle cells to bulge. Seeing if they lead to therapies ?will take a very long time,? she cautions.

When Leinwand started to set up the study of pythons in 2005, plenty of colleagues thought she?d gone crazy, she remembers. And she says that she later found out that one of the early recruits to her lab staff had a deep-seated horror of snakes.

Despite her antipathy, that recruit, Cecilia Riquelme, now a coauthor of the new study, tried a critical early experiment: She exposed mouse heart cells to extracts of snake blood and saw growth in the cells. ?I don?t know whether I literally jumped up and down,? Leinwand says, but she remembers the results as a real eureka moment.

With a lot more experimentation, the Colorado team and colleagues at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa determined that the trigger in the snakes? blood came from a particular combination of fatty acids. These ubiquitous compounds perform a variety of functions in reptiles and humans alike. Just the right mix of three of them ? myristic, palmitic and palmitoleic acid ? turns out to trigger a quick upsizing in heart muscle cells.

Humans and other mammals produce these three fatty acids in some amounts, says pharmacologist Daniele Piomelli of the University of California, Irvine. And earlier research has suggested a role for one of these fatty acids in insulin activity and protection from fat accumulation. Piomelli calls the python mechanism discovery ?remarkable.?

Debt Forgiveness, Euro-Style (The Nation)

The Nation -- At the midnight hour, when financial-market wise guys were predicting disaster, Europe?s political leaders proved to be stronger and braver than America?s. The big nations of the EU worked out a deal to resolve their financial crisis that does what US politicians, including the president, lack the nerve to pursue. The Europeans are whacking the bankers big time.

Yes, the sovereign governments of Europe have to put up more billions to rescue debt-soaked smaller nations like Greece. But the bankers who lent all that money will be compelled to share in the pain ? a 50 per cent write-down on the sovereign-nation bonds they are holding. Ouch.

This may be the beginning of wisdom ? forgiving debts that in any case will never be repaid. That giant step should give Europe a clean start for economic recovery. It?s a much smarter alternative than imposing perpetual austerity on people who are already broke.

American politicians are not there yet, not even close. Republicans are manning the barricades to defend the bankers on everything, even the most modest reform measures. The Obama administration is tinkering around the edges with small-bore adjustments that won?t accomplish much.

Rhetoric notwithstanding, Obama is still shielding the largest banks ? the Wall Street Six ? from the consequences of their own recklessness. The biggest US banks are still holding a lot of debt paper, especially mortgage-backed securities, that has effectively failed but is still booked as okay assets. Federal regulators could pull the plug on these illusions and force an honest accounting but are afraid to hurt big guys who are already fragile. Until debt reduction is undertaken in a major way, especially for home mortgages, American recovery is going to an on-and-off-again affair. [ SEE my article, ?Debt Jubilee, American Style,? in the current issue of the Nation].

The European crisis differs from the US version in this respect: the EU debt is held by national governments while America?s failing debtors are largely private citizens -- especially homeowners stuck with ?underwater? mortgages they cannot pay. Obama announced a small but helpful step this week ? the administration will loosen some rules and make it easier for those he calls ?responsible homeowners? to refinance their mortgages at a lower interest rate. The president also is relaxing the repayment rules on college loans.

By White House estimates, the mortgage refinancing might help as many as one million families. But that?s out of the 11 million sliding toward failure and foreclosure. A good thing to do, surely, but not an answer to the bleeding economy.

As the European crisis plays out, it will be a good test pattern for American politicians to watch. If the principle of debt reduction is as important as some experts believe, the bold action in Europe should clear the way for Europe?s economic recovery. Right now, some Wall Street cheerleaders are blaming Europe for our problems. If Europe gets well and the US remains stagnant, the apologists will have invent a new excuse.

NEW DELHI, Oct 27 (Reuters) ? Three Indian teenagers, picked by a panel including Lewis Hamilton's father Anthony, were presented by Force India on Thursday as winners of a competition to find and fund future Formula One drivers.

The British-based team plans to finance their training in Europe as part of the "One from a Billion" search.

Criticised by local media for not having an Indian driver, Force India co-owner Vijay Mallya was convinced the boys had it in them to become the country's answer to McLaren's Hamilton.

"I'm optimistic we will have more than one home-grown Formula One driver," Mallya told reporters, announcing the result of the contest.

Narain Karthikeyan is the lone local driver in this weekend's Indian Grand Prix. Lotus reserve Karun Chandhok's role will be confined to Friday morning practice.

Hamilton senior shared Mallya's optimism, saying competition winners Arjun Maini, Tarun Reddy and Jehan Daruvala had the potential.

"Given the support, they can become brilliant drivers. It's important for them to race in Europe. If you have to be the best, you have to be among the best," he said.

Before Donald Rumsfeld talked about known unknowns, and Disney?s Pocahontas sang about the things you never knew you never knew, there was Confucius.

Quoting the ancient Chinese philosopher in his book Walden, Henry David Thoreau wrote ?To know that we know what we know and that we do not know what we do not know, that is true knowledge.?

Enter William Hartston, a British chess champion-cum-newspaper columnist, who highlights his own true knowledge in The Things that Nobody Knows: 501 Mysteries of Life, the Universe and Everything, a guide to today?s known unknowns. Written in alphabetical order, it begins with Aardvarks (are they the closest living relative of a creature from which all mammals evolved?) and ends in Zymology, the study of fermentation.

Each mystery is delightfully penned in bite sized chunks that often includes humorous repertoire. For example, Hartson writes that we may only ever know if the ancient Anasazi people of America?s South West were cannibals if we discover a recipe book of the period.

The book falls down, however, when the mysteries, while unknown, are also uninteresting. Case in point is Mystery 73: What colour was Christopher Smart?s cat Jeoffry? I betray my lackadaisical attitude here, but I care little about the 18th Century poet and even less about the shade of his feline, who stars in his poem Jubilate Agno. Another example is Mystery 166: What were the jokes that Einstein told his parrot?

Such entries are not only a trifle boring, they also debase the more relevant curiosities in Harston?s book such as dark matter, the origin of laughter and how are memories stored in the brain.

Harston also tends to get pernickety about some of life?s unknowns. Mystery 37, for example, questions what bees obtain from watching their infamous waggle dance. Discovered in 1946 by Karl von Frisch the waggle dance is a boogie that bees perform to inform their colleagues about the location of a potentially new hive. While scientists don?t know every intricate detail about the dance, they have a pretty good handle on the bizarre display.

Despite these gripes, the book is still highly enjoyable. Giggles and questioning sighs escaped from my mouth on many occasions while reading it. Indeed many a colleague in the New Scientist offices delighted in possible explanations for the inspiration behind the Mannekin Pis statuette in Brussels, Belgium (does it celebrate the tale of a little boy who put out a fire near the king?s castle by peeing on it?).

If only Harston whittled his book down to fewer mysteries, it would have been more captivating and inspiring. But for unknown number 502, I would suggest watching? Pocahontas: How high does the sycamore grow? Or for number 503: Why does the grinning bob cat grin?

I?m running this demo on a clean installation of WordPress 3.2.1 with the Twenty Eleven theme. WP-Invoice should work with any WordPress theme.

First things first. You?ll need to create a new page on your WordPress site where your invoices will be displayed. How you want to do this will depend on the design of your site and what sort of content you publish, but for the sake of simplicity I?ve just added a new blank page on my blog and named it ?Invoices?.

Now you need to install the plugin. You can use an FTP client if that?s your preferred method, but the easiest option is to simply search for the plugin through your WordPress dashboard.

Once WP-Invoice has installed, click on ?activate plugin?. You?ll now see your new ?Invoice? panel in the left sidebar of the WordPress dashboard.

Before you start creating invoices, you?ll need to go to the ?settings? panel and configure your billing system.

There are lots of optional tweaks you can perform here, but at a bare minimum you?ll need to specify the following information:

• Your business name
• Your contact email address
• The currency you are billing in
• Your payment gateway (WP-Invoice supports PayPal and Authorize.net)
• Which page of your WordPress site the invoices will be displayed on
• The tax rate, if you?re charging one

Creating an Invoice

Click on ?add new? to create your first invoice. You will be prompted for the email address of your client, which will be used to notify them of your bill. Remember ? you use your client?s email address here, not your own.

In the ?User Information? panel on the right side of the screen, you can fill in the applicable contact details for your client. This is just for your records though ? the only required piece of information for sending an invoice is the email address.

You create an invoice much like you create a new page on your blog. You can add a title, and in the text editor you can leave a personalized message for your client.

Beneath the text editor is the panel where you add an itemized, line-by-line list of the services or products you are billing for.

Below that, the ?Payment Settings? panel allows you to choose how you will accept the funds. (You need to have already nominated your PayPal or Authorize.net account in the Global Settings).

You can also give your client the option to choose which payment method they use. Toggling the advanced payment options simply allows you to change the currency of this particular invoice.

Once all the details of your invoice are in order, go to the ?Publish? panel in the top right corner of your screen. Here you can nominate a payment due date, give your client the option to make a partial payment, and set up a recurring billing cycle for the invoice. When everything looks good, click ?Save?.

Notifying your client

Once you?ve saved your invoice, the ?Send Notification? panel will appear above your text editor. You can choose an email template here: the default options are ?new invoice?, ?reminder? and ?send receipt?. (You can write your own custom email templates in the WP-Invoice settings panel).

If you like, you can edit the default text in the email, or simply click ?Send Notification?.

When your client receives their notification email, this is what it looks like:

Clicking on the email link will take the client to the Invoices page of your WordPress site, where they will see a basic summary of your bill.

Below the invoice is the payment interface, where the client can fill in their details and pay the bill through the gateway you have specified (PayPal in this case).

Recording payment of invoices

Once the client has paid your invoice, you will be sent a notification email. To record this payment on your WordPress site, go back to the invoice editing page and click ?Add Payment/Charge?. Enter the relevant details and then click ?Process Charge/Payment?.

Done and dusted. That?s the end of the invoicing process.

Keeping track of who owes what

Sending invoices is easy ? keeping tabs on your finances is hard. The WP-Invoice plugin has a ?Reports? function, which uses a graphical interface to show what money you have collected and what?s still owing. Once you?ve sent a few invoices it can also give you statistics on your most valuable clients and highest grossing products or services.

The verdict on WP-Invoice

Everything seems to work smoothly with this plugin, and as a low-maintenance system for sending and managing your invoices I can?t really find fault with it.

What I would very much like to see included in a future release of WP-Invoice is some sort of expenses tracking functionality, where you can record the money that you?ve spent running your business as well as the income from your clients.

Expenses tracking is a feature of hosted billing platforms like Freshbooks, and it?s an absolute Godsend at tax time.

Apart from that, there?s not much else to complain about with this plugin. If you?re paying a monthly fee to use a third party billing app, now might be a good time to save those pennies and start running your own show.

A book about biotech pioneer Genentech from the company's point of view skimps on science in favour of a glossy tale of daring and chutzpah

IN TODAY'S biotech industry, start-up companies sprout from every university biology department, looking to hook up with big pharma or agrochemical firms to take their patented, DNA-based ingenuity lucratively to market. But that option did not exist in 1973, when university researchers created the first artificial gene sequences of recombinant DNA. By 1980 it did, largely due to the struggles, luck and sheer chutzpah of these pioneering molecular biologists. They blazed a commercial and cultural trail, one followed not just by biotechnology but also by the rest of modern high-tech industry.

The leader of the pack was Genentech. If you are interested in a blow-by-blow account of its early, triumphant years - founder and biochemist Herbert Boyer did this, his partner, venture capitalist Robert Swanson, did that, then they beat everyone to synthesis of human insulin - this is your book.

Science writer Sally Smith Hughes presents things entirely from Genentech's point of view, based on its own archives and oral history project. This is perhaps fitting for a company that so embodies US West Coast narcissism (as well as the area's more admirable values) that it commissioned a bronze statue of its two founders' legendary first meeting over beer. Still, history told by participants has value.

There might have been better ways to tell it, though, than a repetitive Homeric paean extolling "masculine" energy, competition and high jinks. In particular, more background on the actual science the company did may have better conveyed the magnitude of what these characters accomplished. But Smith Hughes seems to assume you don't want the details.

Other glossed-over details that, in depth, could have made this a more balanced read include early concerns about genetic modification, and events at the 1975 Asilomar meeting in California, at which scientists agreed to self-police their work on recombinant DNA. Also lacking is context from sources outside the company, as well as insight into Genentech's later years, when triumphs yielded to success, litigation and the firm's eventual acquisition.

This is an encyclopaedic account of one firm's role in a crucial era of biotechnology. It will surely be an invaluable resource for more balanced histories of those amazing years.

Prosecution rests case against Jackson physician (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Prosecutors have concluded their case against the doctor charged with Michael Jackson's death after questioning 33 witnesses.

Prosecutor David Walgren said Monday that he had no further witnesses to call at this point against Dr. Conrad Murray.

Defense attorneys were expected to begin their case later in the day and call 15 witnesses over the next few days.

The final prosecution witness was Dr. Steven Shafer, an expert on the anesthetic propofol that authorities say killed Jackson.

Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter, has acknowledged giving Jackson propofol as a sleep aid in the singer's bedroom.

Shafer told jurors that Murray committed 17 violations of the standard of care that each could have led to Jackson's injury or death.

An expert on the powerful anesthetic blamed for Michael Jackson's death told jurors Monday that it's difficult to know the precise effects of the drug on the singer because he had been given so much of it in the months before he died.

Dr. Steven Shafer made the statement while being cross-examined by lead defense attorney Ed Chernoff, who noted the risk that Jackson would stop breathing should have been low after the first few minutes the drug was administered on the day he died.

Chernoff based that conclusion on models and research done by Shafer.

"In Mr. Jackson's case, it's harder to have that certainty," Shafer replied. "There's very little, almost no precedent for this level of propofol exposure."

Shafer, a Columbia University researcher and professor, said Jackson had been receiving propofol almost every night for more than two months, according to a police statement by Dr. Conrad Murray. The Houston-based cardiologist has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Shafer previously testified that he thinks a propofol overdose killed Jackson. But he said Murray kept no records about how much of the drug he gave the singer.

Shafer has said the only possible explanation for Jackson's death based on the evidence was that Murray put the singer on an IV drip of propofol then left the room after the singer appeared to be asleep.

Shafer is the final prosecution witness, and defense attorneys are expected to begin presenting their case later in the day. Murray's attorneys will likely ask a judge to dismiss the case after the prosecution rests.

The defense will have its chance to counter four weeks of damaging testimony from 33 prosecution witnesses who have cast Murray as an inept, distracted and opportunistic doctor who repeatedly broke legal, ethical and professional guidelines.

The defense case is expected to include 15 witnesses. Murray's attorneys have not publicly revealed whether they will call him to testify.

Jurors have heard from the doctor through a more than two-hour interview with police, and it seems unlikely his attorneys would subject their client to what would be blistering questioning from prosecutors.

Shafer has not retreated from his position that Murray is solely responsible for Jackson's death and that the cardiologist committed 17 egregious violations of medical practices that each could have either led to Jackson's serious injury or death.

Defense attorneys expect their case will last through at least Thursday.

Out of sight of the jury, the defense's theory has shifted in recent months from arguing that Jackson swallowed propofol and gave himself the fatal dose and more recently that the singer had swallowed several pills of the sedative lorazepam, which led to his death.

They may also argue that Jackson somehow gave himself a shot of propofol after Murray left the room, killing him quickly.

Nancy Fagan: Halloween Can Forecast Divorce In The New Year

I like to refer to Halloween as the relationship fortune telling holiday. You don't need a crystal ball to see how your relationship will fare in the new year. Instead, the foreboding signs that divorce is coming will play out in the details of the spooky holiday. You just have to know what to look for.

If you recognize any of the three scary relationship signs below, it might be time to take off the mask and look at the ugly truth hiding beneath. Like all things preventative, if you can detect relationship problems early on, you have a better chance of fixing the relationship before it dies.

Scary Sign 1: A sudden change

Most couples celebrate each Halloween the way they always have -- doing the same thing. For some it involves dressing up in matching costumes (him a hamburger and her a box of fries). Some choose not to celebrate and even ignore children shouting trick-or-treat at the front door. Falling into a routine isn't always a bad reflection on a couple's commitment. Sometimes, change is the sign of trouble.

Reflecting back on his marriage, Garrick remembered, "The only thing that changed about Halloween was that we didn't have as much fun and my ex-wife stopped decorating the house to freak the kids out."

Garrick's memory of behaviors that seemed inconsequential turned out to be a sign that he and his wife were had lost their celebratory ways. Don't make the mistake Garrick did. If you see the same thing happen in your relationship, there is only one thing to do -- direct your flashlight straight in your spouse's costumed-eyes and talk about what's truly going on.

Scary Sign 2: Costumes that sex it up

Costumes have a way of bringing out more than a spouse's alter ego. If your spouse usually dons a costume in the likes of Gumby, the Flying Nun or a favorite cartoon character, you have nothing to worry about. He or she is someone who feels secure enough in the marriage to act out fantasies that would normally get laughed at.

On the frightening side, people who are contemplating divorce something treat the day (usually without awareness) as a rehearsal to freely dip their toe into single life. If they like what they experience, it could wreak havoc on your marriage later on.

Costumes that lean toward trouble are those that are alluring to the opposite sex. You know the type -- the naughty nurse, French maid, Playboy Bunny (obviously for women) and the shirtless fireman, Tarzan or anything that makes a woman swoon.

"I arrived late to my husband's Halloween work party. I looked for his usual "plumber man" outfit (accessorized with a fake butt crack). I saw him cozying up to a sexy Medusa. He'd ditched his plastic buttocks for a chiseled set of abs and bulging biceps he'd been working on for 6 months. Boy did I let him have it! My gut was right. Divorce papers arrived four months later along with his new address -- Medusa's house!"

Scary Sign 3: Separateness

Halloween is a time for couples to focus their attention on shared activities -- the children, carving pumpkins, hay rides, haunted houses. When a relationship begins to dissolve, it typically manifests itself in a shift from togetherness to separateness. Ironically, the fun nature of the holiday has a way of not only exposing a couple's emotional distance, but also making it more noticeable.

Marley's husband departed from the marriage gradually, "Two years before we separated, Dylan lost complete interest in what's we'd always done for Halloween. All he did was hang out with his friends. It became a bigger deal for him to dress up and go out and drink. I was left to be with kids and he slowly withdrew more and more."

Marital separateness can also be so subtle that a couple barely notices. However, if they look for the red flags, it will very apparent they are married but doing it separately.

Lynda and Harry usually spent weeks planning their pet costume BBQ. Last year she did it alone. When party day arrived, "I knew something was off. He didn't want to touch me when people arrived. As a matter of fact, he avoided all affection for two months until I forced his ass into counseling." Sure enough, Harry had some big issues but their story ends on a happy note. Lynda recently reported, "He's back to groping my backside ever chance he gets."

Let Lynda be your role model if you detect changes in your relationship that you don't feel good about. Even if your partner insists that nothing is wrong, do what she did and get to the bottom of it. It could save your relationship from becoming a statistic.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is heading west Monday morning to pitch his American Jobs Act in Las Vegas and speak at campaign events there and in California.

While in Las Vegas, he will speak at a campaign event and will then meet with homeowners at a private residence to talk about his jobs proposal now before Congress.

Then, the president will travel to Los Angeles, where he will talk at two campaign events at private homes.

He will spend the night in Los Angeles.

Olympus chairman stepping down amid scrutiny (AP)

TOKYO ? Olympus Corp. said Wednesday that Chairman and President Tsuyoshi Kikukawa is stepping down amid widening scrutiny into acquisitions after the company's British ex-CEO alleged financial wrongdoing.

The Japanese camera and medical device maker said the move was to take responsibility for the troubles caused to customers, business partners and investors over recent media reports that have sent Olympus stock plunging.

Olympus shares, which have lost half their value in the last two weeks, fell 7.6 percent Wednesday.

The drop followed Kikukawa's firing of Chief Executive Michael Woodford after he questioned a $687 million payment to financial advisers as part of Olympus' purchase of the U.K.'s Gyrus Group Plc. as too high.

The payment represented more than a third of the $2 billion purchase. Fees for advisers are normally 1 to 2 percent of the deal value.

Shuichi Takayama, who was tapped president, apologized for the latest woes, including the sliding stock price, and promised to do his utmost to investigate what had happened.

"We will work day by day with sincerity and with all our hearts to resolve the problem, regain social trust and allay the worries of our customers, business partners and investors as soon as possible," he said in a statement.

Last week, the company said it would establish an independent task force to review past acquisitions, seeking to ease mounting shareholder pressure.

Kikukawa was a no-show at a hastily called news conference at a Tokyo hotel, baffling reporters who had expected him to address Woodford's allegations. Typically, when a corporate leadership change takes place in Japan, the outgoing executive meets the press to introduce his successor.

Instead, the company released a seven-sentence statement from Kikukawa that was read out loud.

"The past acquisitions that have been reported in the media were made after proper assessment and procedures," Kikukawa said. "There was absolutely no wrongdoing, but we are setting up an independent committee and are preparing once again for an impartial investigation."

Takayama then appeared alone and evaded the bulk of intense questioning from journalists. He confirmed the independent task force would be established "as soon as possible" but did not give a specific time frame. He defended the advisory payments as "proper," but declined to go into any details, deferring to the task force.

He expressed confidence that Olympus shares would bounce back.

"It's not as if the value of our business has been damaged," he said. "Our operations have been progressing smoothly."

He said Woodford had been dismissed because of his unilateral decision-making and intimidating managerial style. The Briton also spent much of his time outside of Japan, Takayama said.

The clash between Kikukawa and Woodford, a Briton and one of a handful of foreigners to ever head a major Japanese company, was widely viewed here as raising questions about whether old-style Japanese management was up-to-date on global standards.

Woodford had also questioned the lofty prices Olympus paid for three other money-losing Japanese companies that appear to have little strategic value.

He commissioned Pricewaterhouse Coopers to analyze the deals and distributed the results to the board of directors.

The findings compelled Woodford to call for Olympus executives to resign.

"In putting the company first, the honourable way forward would be for you and Mori-san to face the consequences of what has taken place, which is a shameful saga by any stretch of the imagination," he said in an Oct. 11 letter to Kikukawa, referring to Hisashi Mori, a group president at Olympus.

"It is clear that the current situation is now untenable and to move forward positively the necessary course of action is for you both to tender your resignations from the Board."

Sweets still shine despite silver price rise (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? It's festival season, and that means sweets -- often garnished with edible silver leaf for that final gourmet touch.

Even this year's steep rise in silver prices hasn't deterred confectioners from presenting sweets rolled in fine sheets of silver called varq during the long festive season that climaxes with Diwali celebrations this week.

The price of silver has increased by about a third to roughly $32 an ounce from a year ago, though it spiked as high as $50 an ounce in April. Still, manufacturers of silver leaf and confectioners say they see little impact.

"The prices of silver leaves are at least 30 percent higher compared to the last festival season ... but there is not much effect on the demand," said K.A. Patel of Amee Enterprise, a silver leaf manufacturer from Gujarat.

Silver leaf is still made by hand in small workshops by men pounding on a piece of silver until it is flattened into extremely fine sheets. Interest surges during the festival season as people celebrate with sweets.

"There is more demand during the festival season as people like to indulge and binge on food," said Patel.

Once used to garnish the food of royalty, silver and even gold is gaining popularity as a garnish for chocolates and cakes, in the form of dust or leaves.

But silver really comes into its own to wrap festival sweets such as kaju katli, which is made of cashew nuts, sugar, milk and powdered cardamom.

Silver is technically flavourless but consumers say it does add a distinct taste to sweets.

"They make them look nice, plus kaju katlis without the leaf just aren't the same," says Satyam Pati, a content writer from Bangalore.

Used for centuries in food, tobacco, mouth fresheners and for garnishing dishes such as biryani fried rice, silver is also said to have therapeutic properties.

Some traditional physicians still recommend it as beneficial for the heart, stomach and the mind. A preserve of Indian gooseberries coated in silver is a popular cure prescribed by ayurveda practitioners for digestive problems and a variety of other ills.

"Just yesterday, a girl came and bought varq from me for wrapping her herbal medicines in, a hakim (traditional medical practitioner) had recommended it to her for an eye problem," says Mohammed Wasim, a silver leaf maker from Lucknow.

But questions have been raised about the adverse effects of silver on health, with spurious, adulterated products found. Some confectioners even stopped using silver leaf.

"Unless you buy sweets from a good store, you can never be sure of the quality of varq, so I don't really like it," says Mayank Tyagi, a marketing professional from Gurgaon.

Not everyone agrees, however.

"I feel sweets are incomplete without it," says Wasim.

Studio pulling Harry Potter discs from stores December 29 (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Warner Brothers is taking a page from Disney.

The studio announced that it will pull all Harry Potter DVDs and Blu-rays from store shelves on December 29, 2011.

Move follows the November 11 home entertainment release of the final film in the franchise, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2," which should send disc sales into the stratosphere. The studio is also releasing a box-set of all eight Potter films on that date.

Disney has employed a similar strategy with animated hits like "Beauty and the Beast" and "Sleeping Beauty," re-releasing the movies in theaters and on tricked out versions for limited periods of time.

If the runaway success of the 3D re-release of "The Lion King" is any guide, fans can expect Potter to wave his wand in theaters at some point in the future.

Warner Brothers says the new moratorium will not apply to digital copies or video-on-demand.

Imagine having skin so supple you could stretch it out to more than twice its normal length in any direction - repeatedly - yet it would always snap back completely wrinkle-free when you let go of it. You would certainly never need Botox.

That enviable elasticity is one of several new features built into a new transparent skin-like pressure sensor that is the latest sensor developed by Stanford's Zhenan Bao, associate professor of chemical engineering, in her quest to create an artificial "super skin." The sensor uses a transparent film of single-walled carbon nanotubes that act as tiny springs, enabling the sensor to accurately measure the force on it, whether it's being pulled like taffy or squeezed like a sponge.

"This sensor can register pressure ranging from a firm pinch between your thumb and forefinger to twice the pressure exerted by an elephant standing on one foot," said Darren Lipomi, a postdoctoral researcher in Bao's lab, who is part of the research team.

"None of it causes any permanent deformation," he said.

Lipomi and Michael Vosgueritchian, graduate student in chemical engineering, and Benjamin Tee, graduate student in electrical engineering, are the lead authors of a paper describing the sensor published online Oct. 23 by Nature Nanotechnology. Bao is a coauthor of the paper.

The sensors could be used in making touch-sensitive prosthetic limbs or robots, for various medical applications such as pressure-sensitive bandages or in touch screens on computers.

The key element of the new sensor is the transparent film of carbon "nano-springs," which is created by spraying nanotubes in a liquid suspension onto a thin layer of silicone, which is then stretched.

When the nanotubes are airbrushed onto the silicone, they tend to land in randomly oriented little clumps. When the silicone is stretched, some of the "nano-bundles" get pulled into alignment in the direction of the stretching.

When the silicone is released, it rebounds back to its original dimensions, but the nanotubes buckle and form little nanostructures that look like springs.

"After we have done this kind of pre-stretching to the nanotubes, they behave like springs and can be stretched again and again, without any permanent change in shape," Bao said.

Stretching the nanotube-coated silicone a second time, in the direction perpendicular to the first direction, causes some of the other nanotube bundles to align in the second direction. That makes the sensor completely stretchable in all directions, with total rebounding afterward.

Additionally, after the initial stretching to produce the "nano-springs," repeated stretching below the length of the initial stretch does not change the electrical conductivity significantly, Bao said. Maintaining the same conductivity in both the stretched and unstretched forms is important because the sensors detect and measure the force being applied to them through these spring-like nanostructures, which serve as electrodes.

The sensors consist of two layers of the nanotube-coated silicone, oriented so that the coatings are face-to-face, with a layer of a more easily deformed type of silicone between them.

Using carbon nanotubes bent to act as springs, Stanford researchers have developed a stretchable, transparent skin-like sensor. The sensor can be stretched to more than twice its original length and bounce back perfectly to its original shape. It can sense pressure from a firm pinch to thousands of pounds. The sensor could have applications in prosthetic limbs, robotics and touch-sensitive computer displays. The middle layer of silicone stores electrical charge, much like a battery. When pressure is exerted on the sensor, the middle layer of silicone compresses, which alters the amount of electrical charge it can store. That change is detected by the two films of carbon nanotubes, which act like the positive and negative terminals on a typical automobile or flashlight battery.

The change sensed by the nanotube films is what enables the sensor to transmit what it is "feeling."

Whether the sensor is being compressed or extended, the two nanofilms are brought closer together, which seems like it might make it difficult to detect which type of deformation is happening. But Lipomi said it should be possible to detect the difference by the pattern of pressure.

With compression, you would expect to see sort of a bull's-eye pattern, with the greatest deformation at the center and decreasing deformation as you go farther from the center.

"If the device was gripped by two opposing pincers and stretched, the greatest deformation would be along the straight line between the two pincers," Lipomi said. Deformation would decrease as you moved farther away from the line.

Bao's research group previously created a sensor so sensitive to pressure that it could detect pressures "well below the pressure exerted by a 20 milligram bluebottle fly carcass" that the researchers tested it with. This latest sensor is not quite that sensitive, she said, but that is because the researchers were focused on making it stretchable and transparent.

"We did not spend very much time trying to optimize the sensitivity aspect on this sensor," Bao said.

"But the previous concept can be applied here. We just need to make some modifications to the surface of the electrode so that we can have that same sensitivity."

Why you should start investing in the stock market

There are several reasons to start investing in the stock market.

1. Compounding
2. Historical Returns
3. Efficient Taxation

Compounding refers to how a an investment will progressively earn greater and greater returns the longer it is invested. For example, let?s say you invest $10,000 in the stock market and average a 10% return annually. In year 1, you will earn $100 or 10%, but in year two you will earn $110 or 11% on your original $1,000 and in year 25 you would earn approximately $985, almost 100% of your original investment. The longer your money is compounding the greater your returns will be asusming you can maintain the percentage return.

Historical returns for the stock market have over the long run outperformed other types of investments such as bonds, preferred shares, GICs and money market investments. This is even more true today with interest bearing investments paying such low rates. The rate of a 5 year GIC is currently about 1.85%, which is not even keeping up with inflation in Canada, which is currently at 3.1%

Efficient Taxation refers to the way that investments in the stock market are taxed less than other investments. When you invest in an interest bearing investment such as a bond or GIC, the interest is treated as regular income and you will have to pay income tax at your current marginal rate of tax. When you invest in the stock market, you can earn capital gains or dividend income both of which are taxed more favourably than interest income. Capital gains arise when you sell shares for more than you paid for them and they receive a 50% tax break. If you earn $10,000 from a stock investment only $5,000 of it will be taxed, this mean that the most you will ever pay is 23.2% tax if you were in the highest tax bracket. Dividend income receives favourable tax treatment as well. When dividend income is received the amount reported as income would be grossed up by 45%, however,a 19% dividend tax credit significantly reduces tax you will pay on them. In fact, Canadians with no other sources of income can receive over $65,000 in dividend income tax free when the basic personal amount and dividend tax credits are applied.

The above examples are just a few of the reasons why you should start investing in the stock market and there are way to safely do so if you take the time to properly educate yourself.
